16:00 <MTughan> That's not a whole window transparency. Just a background transparency.

16:00 <xcamel> it looks good...

16:00 <MTughan> Nuts... When I sent him a bug report, I was going to ask if he could look at the BOINC Manager...

16:40 <PovAddict> try it?

16:40 <PovAddict> depends on Apache

16:42 <MTughan> And it goes!

16:43 <PovAddict> it's downloading?

16:43 <MTughan> Yep.

16:43 <PovAddict> cool

16:43 <PovAddict> then you can run 'svn update' from inside the boinc directory

16:43 <MTughan> So... If I do an update after I've edited stuff, how does it do that? Does it overwrite my changes?

16:43 <PovAddict> it will (try to) merge your changes with the ones from server

16:44 <PovAddict> it's a line-wise merge; if both edit same line, there is a conflict

16:45 <PovAddict> and I don't have experience with resolving conflicts from the command line; TortoiseMerge from TortoiseSVN has a nice GUI for that :P

16:47 <MTughan> What the? SVN on OS X works, but on Fedora doesn't... Both have HTTPS support. "Skipped 'https://boinc.berkeley.edu/svn/trunk/boinc'"

17:46 <PovAddict> uppercase converts an input file to uppercase... so if checkpoint says "I stopped at byte 100 last time", it has to seek to that place on both input and output and continue converting

17:46 <mweltin> I'm not sure, but a truncation works for my application.

17:46 <mweltin> ok.

17:47 <mweltin> Is there anything wrong with making hte checkpoint file and the inputfile (i.e. the result) the same file?

17:47 <mweltin> ok I had more than one question.

17:47 <mweltin> sorry.

17:48 <PovAddict> the input?

17:48 <PovAddict> dont you mean output?

17:49 <mweltin> The workunit, the lowercase letters that come in.

17:49 <PovAddict> how could that be the checkpoint?

17:49 <PovAddict> you aren't supposed to edit input files

17:49 <mweltin> ok

17:50 <mweltin> that was what I needed to know.

21:13 <zombie67> ah!

21:14 <zombie67> question about a bug

21:14 <MTughan> Seems rather regular now...

21:15 <zombie67> When multiple WUs, all with the same due date/time, become potentially late, BOINC would run a few minutes on one, then a few minutes on another, etc.etc.  This ensured that all would be late.  It should be finishing one before moving to the next, so that at least some are returned on time.  Has this been fixed?

21:16 <PovAddict> what version are you on?

21:17 <zombie67> 5.10.8 linux 64 bit

21:17 <PovAddict> John McLeod said he fixed that problem a year ago, either his fix was never checked in or the bug was re-introduced

21:18 <MTughan> 5.10.21 is the latest for Linux x86_64.

21:18 <zombie67> right.  so I am trying to figure if it has been re-fixed, and if so, with which version?

21:18 <zombie67> I don't want to upgrade if it isn't re-fixed yet.

21:18 <MTughan> 5.10.8 was released June this year... So if it was a year ago that it was "fixed", then you should have it...

21:19 <MTughan> June 25, 2007.

21:19 <zombie67> I saw the problem with 5.10.8

21:19 <MTughan> Yes, I know. But that version was released less than a year ago, so it should have the fix.

21:19 <zombie67> should but doesn't

21:20 <MTughan> Yeah, I know... PovAddict?

21:22 <zombie67> who would know?

21:22 <MTughan> Can you force more WU downloads by suspending WUs?

21:22 <freelarry> i hav in past

21:22 <zombie67> the trick is to get WUs with exactly the same due dates

21:39 <zombie67> 5.10.8

21:39 <PovAddict> well, I'm bringing my client back to sensible settings

21:40 <zombie67> I am thinking the sh command is failing, because the folder BOINC already exists

21:40 <PovAddict> I always upgrade it that way

21:41 <MTughan> PovAddict: Am I able to control BOINC on another machine with the manager on my machine?

21:41 <PovAddict> yes

21:42 <PovAddict> http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/RpcAuth

21:42 <Romulus> Title: RpcAuth - BOINC - Trac (at boinc.berkeley.edu)

21:42 <MTughan> Ah, I was wondering what to use for a password...

21:43 <PovAddict> the contents of gui_rpc_auth.cfg, but I bet the client isn't allowing remote connections anyway

21:43 <MTughan> It has to be configured for that?

21:43 * MTughan reads on...

21:46 <MTughan> I still can't seem to connect...

21:46 <PovAddict> did you add a remote_hosts.cfg?

21:46 <MTughan> Yep.

21:46 <zombie67> nope.  install still not working.  Still 5.10.8

21:47 <PovAddict> editing either gui_rpc_auth.cfg or remote_hosts.cfg needs a client restart

21:47 <Romulus> as weird as hell but i got 6 machines in it - and I had to say

21:47 <MTughan> I restarted.

21:47 <PovAddict> what error do you get?

21:47 <MTughan> Not the machine, but the client.

21:47 <zombie67> who you?

21:47 <MTughan> BOINC is unable to find a client, or something like that.

21:47 <zombie67> MT:  do you have a firewall running?

21:47 <zombie67> on the remote machine?

21:48 <MTughan> On the remote machine? Not sure...

21:48 <MTughan> "BOINC Manager is not able to connect to a BOINC client.":

21:48 <zombie67> FWIW, I was never able to get the remote client thing working with BOINCmgr.

21:48 <PovAddict> wow

21:49 <PovAddict> a microSD with 16 gig, USD 99

21:49 <PovAddict> 15mm × 11mm × 0.7mm

21:49 <MTughan> Nice.

21:49 <Romulus> <http://ln-s.net/15mu> (at en.wikipedia.org)

21:49 <MTughan> I have no idea where to find firewall settings on KDE...

21:50 <MTughan> Yeah, microSD is incredibly small.

21:50 <PovAddict> it's probably iptables, you probably need to install a separate app to graphically konfigure it

21:50 <PovAddict> (beware of the pun)

21:51 <MTughan> lol

21:52 <MTughan> Found it. Yes, the firewall is on. Do we know what port it uses?

21:52 <MTughan> BOINC, that is.

21:52 <PovAddict> 31416

21:53 <PovAddict> (pi)

21:53 <MTughan> lol, nice.

21:53 <PovAddict> used to use 1000-something

21:53 <PovAddict> and even registered it in IANA

21:53 <MTughan> Okay, 'nuther try...

21:53 <PovAddict> but Windows services were sometimes taking over that port, causing problems for many users

21:54 <MTughan> Nuts... Took a bit longer, but same error.

21:54 <PovAddict> berkeley requested IANA for another port, IANA didn't reply quick, BOINC took 31416 without registration

21:54 <PovAddict> that's what I read about the story...

21:56 <MTughan> Gonna try the other way, from the VM to my Mac. I have a bit more control on here.

21:56 <PovAddict> are you using bridged mode?

21:56 <PovAddict> for VM network

21:56 <MTughan> In VMware? Yeah.

21:57 <MTughan> Not NAT.

21:58 *** wdsmia has quit IRC

21:59 * xcamel is away: Gone away for now.

21:59 *** xcamel is now known as xcamel_away

21:59 <MTughan> Nice... Connecting the other way works on the first try. Gives me the impression that the BOINC client didn't restart...

22:00 <zombie67> tried rebooting, reinstalling, still 5.10.8

22:00 <PovAddict> zombie67: o_O

22:00 <PovAddict> you sure you aren't running 5.10.8 installer?

22:00 <zombie67> yep.  even re-downloaded it

22:01 <zombie67> is it perhaps installing it in some other location than ./ ?

22:01 <PovAddict> I doubt it...

22:01 <PovAddict> is it the debug installer?

22:01 <zombie67> ?

22:01 <Romulus> lol darwin award >> Man Burns House While Trying To Kill Yellow Jackets

22:01 <zombie67> it is the one from teh download page

22:02 <PovAddict> there's i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh and i686-pc-linux-gnu_debug.sh for all versions

22:02 <PovAddict> debug installer uses a different directory for some strange reason

22:03 <MTughan> Okay, turning off the firewall on the VM doesn't help...

22:04 <zombie67> it is boinc_5.10.21_x686_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh

22:04 <MTughan> And BOINC's definitely not running... CPU usage is almost 0.

22:06 <PovAddict> downloading it

22:06 <PovAddict> no linux x64 machine to test it on, but the installer alone will run on cygwin

22:06 <MTughan> Haha! Got it!

22:07 <MTughan> I think it was because the GUI was running on the other machine. Just running the client and trying to connect to that worked.

22:07 <PovAddict> weird

22:07 <PovAddict> works with multiple GUI RPC connections

22:12 <PovAddict> zombie67: the installer definitely contains the correct version

22:12 *** freakazoid0223 has quit IRC

22:16 <sethy> use beer, wine is for girls

22:16 * sethy walks away

22:16 <MTughan> It says that WINE is supported.

22:16 <PovAddict> and I'm sure beer isn't

22:17 <MTughan> Better? Instead of a noun, it's not an acronym.

22:17 <MTughan> now*

22:18 <zombie67> nope

22:18 <PovAddict> :-\

22:18 <zombie67> I wonder if it really is .21, but the help panel just wasn't updated?

22:18 <PovAddict> you sure boinc is stopped?

22:19 <MTughan> Possible, but unlikely.

22:19 <zombie67> yep

22:19 <MTughan> If you want, I can stop mine and then boot up the manager, see what it says here.

22:19 <zombie67> I would appreciate it!

22:19 <zombie67> I did "sh -v ./bo....."

22:20 * sethy walks back

22:20 <sethy> who's supporting ninja day?

22:20 <zombie67> just so I could see it is really doing

22:20 <MTughan> 5.10.21. Sorry.

22:20 <zombie67> aargh!

22:20 <zombie67> I am going to move my .8 install to a new name, and see what sh does now.

22:21 * sethy looks @ PovAddict

22:22 * sethy notices

22:22 <zombie67> wow.  created a new boinc folder with 5.10.8

22:23 <sethy> why am i only getting 350kB/s?

22:23 <sethy> yes

22:23 <sethy> down

22:23 <MTughan> That's not bad. I hit a ceiling of about 500KB/s.

22:23 <sethy> i should be getting 760kB/s

22:23 <MTughan> Oh...

22:23 <zombie67> I am going to try downloading it from the archive instead

22:24 <MTughan> What are you downloading and what are you using to download it?

22:24 <sethy> that shouldnt be a problem

22:24 <sethy> downloading linux iso via mirror

22:24 <MTughan> What you're downloading could affect it. Depending on how many other people are downloading it.

22:25 <sethy> i know

22:25 <sethy> but it seems capped at 350 on everything i dl

22:25 <MTughan> Oh...

22:29 <sethy> google doesnt have limited bandwidth

22:29 <sethy> because they are the internet

22:30 <MTughan> Yes they do. It's just incredibly high.

22:30 <sethy> exactly

22:30 <sethy> and when is someone gonna break that?

22:30 <PovAddict> sethy: I told you to get DTA beta

22:30 <MTughan> When everyone tries to DoS Google at the same time.

22:30 <sethy> NOW you tell me it supports multiple mirrors

22:31 <MTughan> He told you that before, as I remember...

22:32 <zombie67> I did a moved BOINC to old_BOINC

22:33 <zombie67> then sh boinc....

22:33 <zombie67> then went into the newly created BOINC folder

22:33 <PovAddict> then cd BOINC; ./boinc --version

22:33 <MTughan> So only the GUI hasn't been updated...

22:33 <PovAddict> boincmgr --version?

22:42 <sethy> all your base are belong to me

22:43 <MTughan> PovAddict: So theoretically, with the right settings, I could control BOINC on your computer with BOINC here.

22:43 <PovAddict> correct

22:43 <MTughan> Cool...

22:43 <PovAddict> means I need to configure boinc to allow the connection, and forward port in router

22:43 <PovAddict> but latency will hurt

22:43 <PovAddict> in a particular way...

22:44 <PovAddict> imagine ping is 250ms
