00:01 <MTughan> Haha!

00:01 <MTughan> &xkcd

00:01 <Romulus> http://www.xkcd.com/

00:02 <MTughan> So it's just gone temporarily to another project, where my CPID was changed?

00:04 <MTughan> There it is... Riesel Sieve is the one that went.

00:04 <MTughan> Although I had more than 1700 credits in RS.

00:04 <MTughan> Yep, CPIDs different.

00:05 *** infinisoft has quit IRC

00:05 <zombie67> put one machine on each project that is a problem, ahve them crunch and return a WU.  within a couple of days, everything will be synched

00:06 <MTughan> My Fedora machine is crunching RS, but it just has TSP WUs right now.

00:07 <MTughan> Crud... Just got 26 RS WUs. ;(

00:07 <MTughan> Wait... :'(

00:08 <MTughan> Along with the 10 TSPs I already had.

00:09 <zombie67> no prob.  Just use the suspend button to get one of each crunchged, then go back to all

03:18 <efc> windows 2k can handle 2 or 3 gigs of ram, right..

03:20 *** zombie67_ has joined #boinc

03:20 *** zombie67_ has quit IRC

03:21 <mweltin> well that amount of ram was not all that common when it came out, but it was supposed to be a server.

03:21 <mweltin> Tank_Master would know.

03:22 <efc> I see some fairly reasonable memory on ebay, trying to figure out if its some proprietary junk

03:23 <efc> its cheap enough i wonder..

03:23 <efc> Need ECC for this box, thats what makes it hard

03:24 <mweltin> I was never much for hardware, too many crappy things to figure out, and you can make an expensive mistake easy.

03:24 <mweltin> well I could.

03:24 <efc> yeah know what you mean

03:25 <efc> this is HP memory.. could be some crazy proprietary socket

03:25 <mweltin> HP makes  a great printer but computer not so much so.

03:28 <efc> i used to be able to just punch in the machine with crucial but then their prices got out of line

03:29 <efc> $180 for 2 gig

03:34 <mweltin> snap

03:34 <mweltin> that is a good deal

03:34 <mweltin> almost worth a chance of a mistake

03:35 <efc> the 180 is the crucial memory

03:35 <efc> ebay is $30 for the same thing, with an HP part number

03:36 <efc> I don't really need it, just looking before it gets impossible to find

03:40 <mweltin> are you a computer pack rat?

03:41 <efc> Yeah..

03:41 <efc> Oldest machine still working is a Cyrix 133, got it up on BOINC this weekend

03:42 <mweltin> LOL

03:42 <mweltin> nice

03:43 <efc> it was showing 40 days to finish a WU

03:44 <efc> terrible floating point unit in that thing

03:44 <mweltin> at least it has one.

03:45 <efc> its better than the one in a 486 but not as good as a pentium

03:45 <efc> its not pipelined

03:46 <mweltin> really I thought the pipe line was an old invention

03:47 <efc> It is, but afaik the pentium had the first pipelined FPU in the x86 line

03:48 <efc> unfortunately that HP memory seems to be something proprietary. i can't find out whats different about it though. How nice of HP to STILL use proprietary everything.

03:48 <mweltin> afaik

03:48 <mweltin> ?

03:48 <efc> as far as iknow

03:48 <mweltin> ahh

03:49 <mweltin> yeah but the L4 or 4L whatever printer was great.  Lasted forever.

03:49 <mweltin> my first cs prof was a printer driver writer for HP

03:49 <mweltin> cool guy.

03:50 *** frost has joined #boinc

03:50 <efc> those old ones were battle wagons

03:50 <mweltin> but you are right, not much of a computer maker.

03:50 <mweltin> the only thing beter was a okey data dot matrix printer.

03:51 <efc> I had a Panasonic KXP1024 i think.. still works

03:51 <efc> darn, I know that memory module is almost the right thing...

03:52 <mweltin> get it

03:52 <mweltin> who knows you may need it some day.

03:52 <mweltin> and if not you may find someone that needs and make a good profit.

03:52 <efc> well if it doesn't work i can only use it on one specific model of HP workstation

03:53 *** andresgr has joined #boinc

03:53 <mweltin> trust me somewher there is a computer pack rat out there being born right now, and that memory stick is the only thing between them and greatness.

03:53 <mweltin> or not

03:57 <efc> at this point I can't see why companies would use proprietary memory.. its not 1985 anymore

03:57 <efc> I guess they are able to mark up upgrades like crazy

03:57 <efc> But then, why choose them, when there are plenty of choices that use standard parts

03:58 <efc> Packard-Bell.. I kid you not, they used to solder the hard drives on the motherboard

03:59 <mweltin> the apple air solders their memory in place

03:59 <mweltin> and that just came out.

03:59 <Romulus> now saying probably drug related...

04:00 <mweltin> that random comment thing romie does I don't like

04:00 <efc> i guess somebody important likes it

04:00 <mweltin> I have to read it a few times, scratch my head, and then realize oh its romulus

04:04 <mweltin> where does update_versions get built ?

04:04 <mweltin> I'm in teh tools dir and that is where it is but if I run make for that dir its not rebult

04:07 <mweltin> update_versions can't find the mysql client shared object.

04:07 <CoderForLife> morning folks

04:07 <mweltin> cfl

04:07 <mweltin> I moved mysql around last night ,

04:07 *** Kathryn has joined #boinc

04:07 <mweltin> well acutally removed an old install

04:08 <CoderForLife> you're becoming an admin

04:08 <mweltin> and rebuilt bonic using --with-mysql to the right dir and rebuit it

04:08 <mweltin> but it still can't find the mysql client shared object.

04:08 <efc> ah ha, the manuel for that HP system says its "industry standard"

04:09 <mweltin> I just ran make distclean but

04:09 <mweltin> sweet

04:09 <mweltin> that didn't wipe out the update_versions in the tools dir.

04:10 <mweltin> hey kathryn

04:10 <Kathryn> Hi Markus

04:10 <mweltin> how is life in the fast lane?

04:11 <Kathryn> Exhausting.

04:11 <Kathryn> My one class got their first look at Fedora because I took my laptop in them for them to start typing their science project.

04:11 <CoderForLife> I'll brb - getting some breakfast

04:12 <mweltin> you are going to let 3'rd graders use your laptop.

04:12 <Kathryn> With me sitting right next to them.

04:12 <mweltin> you are more brave than I thought.

04:12 <Kathryn> brave or crazy?

04:12 <mweltin> how did it go?

04:12 <Kathryn> good.

04:12 * mweltin thinks crazy

04:12 * Kathryn agrees

04:13 <Kathryn> They had a lot of fun.  But it's going to take forever to get all three groups done.

04:14 <mweltin> well its a little late for this year but I used to help out at a place called freeGeek in Portland.

04:14 <mweltin> They donate referbs to poeople all over the place.

04:14 <mweltin> if you write then and ask for some boxes you just might get a few.

04:14 <mweltin> worht a shot.

04:15 <Kathryn> Better for them to hand write stuff in class.  Only reason I'm letting them type this is because it's going onto a poster.

04:16 <Kathryn> I'd turn them loose in the computer room, but there's never a guarentee that I'd have a computer for them to work on and the other teachers would kill me for leaving a group of kids unsupervised.

04:16 <mweltin> who writes by hand anymore.

04:16 <Kathryn> My hand writing is getting better now that I have to write on the board.

04:17 <mweltin> I still keep note books for every big project I do.

04:17 <mweltin> I'm on my second notebook for tsp already

04:17 <mweltin> I don't trust computers.

04:17 <Kathryn> I have a notebook for my Linux notes.  Comes in handy.

04:17 <mweltin> which is funny cause I make a living off of them.

04:17 <Kathryn> :)

04:19 <CoderForLife> b w/b

04:19 <mweltin> LOL

04:19 <mweltin> cfl I can compile all day long, but I'm not going to rebuild a python scirpt.

04:20 <CoderForLife> I have not Coded any python

04:20 <mweltin> they are scripts

04:20 <CoderForLife> right

04:21 <mweltin> looks like I'm going to #python for a bit.

04:21 <CoderForLife> I have not Coded any python *scripts*

04:21 <mweltin> it was just a fad.

04:22 <mweltin> Kathryn you ever parse that xml file?

04:22 <Kathryn> Not had time yet.

04:22 <Kathryn> That's a weekend project.

04:23 <Kathryn> And it's possilbe it's a little to ambitious for me at this point.

04:23 <mweltin> Pov will be back by then

04:23 <Kathryn> I'll bug him on gtalk or the link.

04:23 <Kathryn> *like

04:24 <Kathryn> He's the one who told me I need to quit abusing bash and learn a real scripting language.

04:25 <desti> bash scripting can be real powerfull

04:25 <Kathryn> And I don't know much.

04:26 <mweltin> yeah it can be I wish I was better at it.   I always copout and write it in php

04:26 <mweltin> it has an odd syntax

04:29 <andresgr> i prefer groovy for scripting

04:30 <andresgr> platform independent, supports "today" technologies like XML etc.

04:31 <Kathryn> brb  gotta find something for dinner :/

04:58 <clusty> btw

04:58 <clusty> new visual studio out

04:58 <clusty> think its any good?

04:59 <CoderForLife> MS continues to try

05:00 <mweltin> no MS typical "let the user do teh beta test" mentality gets old.

05:00 <mweltin> I never use microsoft stuff unless its a year old if I can help it.

05:00 <mweltin> I use MSVS 2005

05:01 <mweltin> seems to work ok.

05:01 <clusty> for some reason i never liked MS IDE's

05:01 <clusty> they have a weird logics

05:01 <clusty> all of them

05:01 <clusty> btw a quick question

05:01 <clusty> how was the boinc interface designed?

05:01 <mweltin> because they suck and hide everything from you and put options is the most obscure place they can find.

05:01 <clusty> is there like a glade equivalent to WX?

05:02 <mweltin> graphics?

05:02 <mweltin> don't ask me

05:02 <clusty> i soo prefer passing compiler/linker command line

05:04 <clusty> seems quite a bit of fuss lately about new boinc features

05:04 <clusty> will it be easy enough to upgrade the servers?

05:05 * CoderForLife inspects the logwatch report of the new F8 install

05:05 <mweltin> yes

05:05 <clusty> great

05:05 <clusty> i am horrified to be fix databases by hand and so forth

05:06 <mweltin> the database fixes are not hard to do, but the process is not very user friendly.

05:07 <clusty> if there is in general some list of what to do its great

05:07 <clusty> cause most of boinc is not user friendly :D

05:07 <clusty> i mean admin part

05:07 <mweltin> the server has a upgrade tool (but expect minor things to break) but its easy enough to run.

05:08 <clusty> been looking at other frameworks similar to boinc

05:08 <mweltin> the database upgrade is more of a php file that you have to edit to just do the patches you want.  And to do that you need to know the last time you did it, because all the patches are ordered by date.

05:08 <clusty> was it just me or most of others seemed unacceptable?

05:09 <mweltin> GRID or GRIND or whatever sun calls it?

05:09 <clusty> i've seen some ridiculous stuff like using java to write the code

05:11 <clusty> the server interface looks bloody great

05:11 <clusty> you get cute little illustrations done on the fly and such

05:11 <clusty> but in the end is almost impossible to port other apps to them

05:12 <clusty> with boinc you preety much use the supplied wrapper and thats it

05:12 <mweltin> yeah I have not looked into the wrapper, but it seems like it could save a lot of time

05:13 <clusty> fun part is you dont have to modify it much even

05:13 <mweltin> are you good with python?

05:13 <clusty> not really

05:13 <clusty> you?

05:13 <mweltin> no

05:43 <mweltin> it doen't build the thread safe by defult.   I'm not sure, could be legacy issues or speed, I don't know.

05:43 <xcamel> boo...

05:46 <mweltin> xcamel

05:46 <mweltin> how are you?

05:54 <mweltin> I'll never learn.

05:54 <clusty> bad error messages from proggie together with me being a retard SQL-wise

05:54 <clusty> whats so bad with postfix?

05:56 <mweltin> I'll be adding another server, and hence anohter potential admin headach

06:07 <mweltin> both, but linux is easier

19:00 <mweltin> Still getting a strange app build error.

19:01 <mweltin> multiple definitions of some stuff

19:01 <MTughan> What are all the commits to SVN for?

19:01 <mweltin> I'm includeing libsched.a libboinc.a dn libboinc_api.a

19:01 <mweltin> i screwed up the repository.

19:02 <MTughan> You updated some of the GA source files though. Do I need to worry about that?

19:02 <mweltin> everything was building and I ran update from my windows box and then a commit and an update from my linux box and everything broke again.

19:02 <mweltin> no

19:02 <MTughan> K.

19:02 <MTughan> As for the build errors... What symbols are duplicated?

19:02 <mweltin> I'm just trying to get it back to where it was an hour ago.

19:02 <quail> well my desktop just had its yearly de-dusting :-)

19:02 <MTughan> lol

19:02 <quail> hey MTughan

19:02 <MTughan> Is it shiny? xD

19:03 <mweltin> APP_VERSION::clear()  RESULT::clear() WORKUNIT::clear()  generate_signature(char*, char*, R_RSA_PRIVATE_KEY&)

19:03 <MTughan> They're duplicated?

19:03 <Romulus> chased by a truck, and backed over by a snowplow

19:03 <mweltin> yes

19:03 <MTughan> Ah, I think I see why... You have -lboinc twice in your LIB path.

19:04 <quail> well it might run bit cooler now all the crap out of the cpu h/s

19:04 <MTughan> Heh, I just blew a quantity of dust out of my CPU cooler not too long ago.

19:04 <mweltin> I corrected that already

19:05 <quail> yeah animals and computers in the same house does not mix to well

19:05 <MTughan> Not sure if it's any cooler, but it sure doesn't look as dusty. You can really see it on a copper cooler...

19:05 <quail> :-)

19:05 <MTughan> What did you all dust out?

19:06 <quail> vacuum cleaner on low level sucktion

19:07 <MTughan> Wow... My connection dropped there for a while...

19:07 <MTughan> mweltin: Let me look up where those are.

19:08 <mweltin> libboinc.a and

19:08 <mweltin> libsched.a

19:08 <MTughan> They're in both?

19:09 <mweltin> let me pastebin it

19:09 <Romulus> Title: pastebin - collaborative debugging tool (at pastebin.com)

19:10 <mweltin> romies random comments are getting annoying

19:10 <MTughan> Hmm, true...

19:10 <MTughan> On both definitions and Rommie's markovs.

19:11 <MTughan> Did you compile libboinc.a, update the SVN archive, then compile libsched.a? Those might've been moved.

19:11 <mweltin> I had to revert to an older version of the boinc trunk

19:12 <mweltin> nothing was building right  Revision: 14541

19:13 <MTughan> I have all four symbols in the latest libboinc.a...

19:13 <MTughan> Built earlier today.

19:13 <MTughan> Rev 14611

19:14 <mweltin> yeah they are old symbols

19:14 <mweltin> I had ti buiding earlier today.

19:14 <MTughan> Oh crud... They're in libsched.a too...

19:14 <mweltin> I was missing the libsched.a

19:15 <MTughan> First file is lib/gui_rpc_client_ops.C, second is db/boinc_db.C.

19:15 <mweltin> and when I added it everythign was fine until I did my svn udpate.

19:16 <MTughan> You might want to post this to the boinc_dev mailing list. That's a problem.

19:16 <MTughan> I think it's just a naming clash with objects, but it's still wrong.

19:18 <MTughan> Yep, naming clash.

19:18 <MTughan> They are indeed different objects.

19:18 <mweltin> so what is my fix?

19:18 <mweltin> latest stable boinc source?

19:18 <mweltin> and rebuild?

19:18 <MTughan> Rename one of the classes...

19:19 <MTughan> No, it's in the latest, which I have.

19:19 <MTughan> I think you'll either have to rename the classes yourself, or let someone else do it from the boinc_dev mailing list.

19:20 <mweltin> I'd rather someone else do it.

19:20 <mweltin> so should I be building off of trunk or another branch?

19:21 <MTughan> I don't know of any other branches, and trunk still has the error, as I know.

19:22 <MTughan> 14613 is the latest revision, none of the needed files modified.

19:22 <Soul_keeper> my build from like 2 days ago works fine

19:22 <MTughan> Are you using libsched?
