09:49 <sv2_> morning guys....

09:49 <jackygrahamez> hi

09:49 <jackygrahamez> you got everything under control?

09:49 <sv2_> PovAddict - are you around// jackygrahamez - are you around?!

09:50 <sv2_> hey jackygrahamez!!

09:50 <sv2_> nope.. but closer...

09:50 <jackygrahamez> are you boinc clients connecting to the server?

09:50 <sv2_> i discovered that there appears to be a problem/issue with the apache/httpd config...

09:50 <jackygrahamez> usually there are

09:50 <sv2_> i'm getting what essentially is a 404 error...

09:50 <jackygrahamez> What linux distribution?

09:51 <sv2_> i'll post to pastebin in a sec..

09:51 <sv2_> fedora...

09:51 <jackygrahamez> did you install it using yum?

09:52 <jackygrahamez> Well I usually install it using yum and that seems to be the most painless way

09:53 <jackygrahamez> or maybe I should say least painful way

09:53 <jackygrahamez> the other thing, don't create the project using root, I've got that drilled into my head through David

10:31 <PovAdct_w> sv2_: schedulers.txt is the problem

10:32 <sv2_> ok.. so it should be 192.168.1.45/boinctest2_cgi/vgi ... removing the boinctest2

10:32 <sv2_> cgi.. not vgi..

10:33 <PovAdct_w> yup

10:33 <PovAdct_w> try opening it in a browser

10:33 <sv2_> i thought the schedulers.txt was auto generated.. wonder how it got the boinctest2..

10:34 <sv2_> PovAdct_w - when i open the corrected url in the browser.. i get the xml.. with a shared mem err msg..

10:34 <PovAdct_w> shared mem? hmm... gotta ./bin/start the project

10:35 <PovAdct_w> going from a browser should give you an error about "no start tag" (because the browser obviously doesn't send the same request as the BOINC client would)

10:37 <sv2_> PovAdct_w -here's the paste http://pastebin.com/m78217732

10:37 <Romulus> Title: pastebin - collaborative debugging tool (at pastebin.com)

10:37 <sv2_> i'll try running an actual cmd client

10:37 <PovAdct_w> cd /home/boincadm/projects/test2; ./bin/start

10:38 <sv2_> right.. already started it again..

10:38 <sv2_> will it only run once... or continue to recyle...

10:38 <PovAdct_w> then it shouldn't be giving the shmem error

10:40 <sv2_> the client app is now running.. no errs...

10:40 <sv2_> but no output in the /home/boincadm/projects/test2/upload dir either..

10:41 <PovAdct_w> did the client ever get work?

10:43 <PovAdct_w> hmm

10:43 <PovAdct_w> pastebin your result template

10:44 <jackygrahamez> did you make any changes to your template? Did you create an input file?

10:44 <PovAdct_w> I believe hello app is creating an 'output' file and BOINC expects to find something else (like 'out') because that's what the output template says...

10:44 <PovAdct_w> jackygrahamez: input-less app

10:44 <jackygrahamez> how are your creating your work?

10:44 <jackygrahamez> ok

10:47 <sv2_> here you go.... http://pastebin.com/m6508c2d5

10:47 <Romulus> Title: pastebin - collaborative debugging tool (at pastebin.com)

10:47 <sv2_> and yes... pov.. i think you're right....

10:48 <sv2_> but i didn't know/think if i had to match the output file names....

10:48 <jackygrahamez> so you are using the uppercase templates for the helloworld app

10:49 <sv2_> as far as i could tell/see.. they where essentially the same as the ones i had for the hello example..

10:49 <sv2_> with a few minor mods..

10:50 <sv2_> unless i missed something.. which is quite possible!

10:50 <jackygrahamez> can your run helloworld stand alone to see what it generates?

10:50 <sv2_> it generates an 'output' file..

10:50 <sv2_> named 'output'..

10:51 <jackygrahamez> <open_name>output</open_name>

10:51 <sv2_> ok...

10:51 <sv2_> but do i need to just rerun create_worl as well..

10:51 <sv2_> or can i just rerun the client...

10:52 <PovAdct_w> go to http://192.168.1.45/boinctest2/server_status.php and see if you have any work left :)

10:52 <Romulus> <http://tinyurl.com/8q3vjp> (at 192.168.1.45)

10:52 <PovAdct_w> actually... yes you have to create work again

10:52 <PovAdct_w> the existing work is already created with the wrong open_name

10:52 <jackygrahamez> yes but he may also need to cancel the existing work

10:52 <PovAdct_w> changes to a template would only take effect for new work you create later

10:54 <sv2_> here's a paste of the server_status.php page.. http://pastebin.com/m4465dc9e

10:54 <Romulus> Title: pastebin - collaborative debugging tool (at pastebin.com)

10:56 <sv2_> so do i just do a 'create_work', followed by a /bin/stop, bin/start

10:56 <jackygrahamez> can you open http://192.168.1.45/boinctest2_ops/ ?

10:56 <sv2_> it's open now..

10:57 <jackygrahamez> do you know how to cancel the old workunits?

10:57 <sv2_> nope.. but i think yo're about to tell me!

10:58 <jackygrahamez> if its configured correctly you should see a header for Project Management

10:58 <jackygrahamez> There should be a link on the right for cancel workunits

10:59 <sv2_> i'm getting an err that says i have to edit the cancel_wu_action.php by hand..

11:00 <jackygrahamez> you should also be able to see what workunits are currently created on the link for workunits

11:00 <jackygrahamez> right that's a fail safe

11:00 <jackygrahamez> so people know what they are doing before using it

11:01 <jackygrahamez> you can modify this file /html/ops/index.php

11:01 <jackygrahamez> you can modify this file PROJECT/html/ops/index.php

11:01 <sv2_> ok... it says it's cancelled...

11:01 <sv2_> the '1' workunit that is..

11:01 <jackygrahamez> good

11:02 <sv2_> so i do the 'create_work' now..

11:09 <sv2_> hmm... that didn't work!!!

11:10 <sv2_> i did a 'create_work'.. with the same params as before..

11:11 <jackygrahamez> you update the template file?

11:11 <jackygrahamez> how about reset your client

11:11 <sv2_> yep...

11:11 <sv2_> and yep as well...

11:12 <sv2_> but when i look at the admin page for the work units.. it only shows the 1 cancelled unit..

11:12 <jackygrahamez> ok how about run your client again with a flag --exit_after_finish

11:12 <jackygrahamez> ok you need to have a unique name fore each workunit, i recommend inserting a timestamp using a script

11:13 <sv2_> where does the workunit name get defined..

11:30 <MTughan> I got one LHC too, even after I just attached my comp... Woo!

11:34 <MTughan> Hmm... Could a kernel update get stuck because I ran out of room on the /boot partition?

11:34 <PovAdct_w> it could I guess

11:37 <MTughan> I've had this happen twice now. Thinking I'll uninstall an old kernel, then install this one...

11:37 <PovAdct_w> the partition should be enough to hold two kernels and then some

11:37 <MTughan> I already have two kernels.

11:37 <MTughan> And this is a third.

11:38 <sv2_> PovAdct_w - when running a client.. does it matter what user it's run as?

11:38 <PovAdct_w> ahh that explains it

11:38 <PovAdct_w> sv2_: no, as long as you always run it as the same user... on first run, the client creates some files, if you run it as another user later, it may fail to open those files

11:40 <sv2_> PovAdct_w - the client is running.. but there's no file 'output' being created..

11:40 <PovAdct_w> it will be created very briefly...

11:41 <PovAdct_w> as soon as the app writes the file, it quits

11:41 <PovAdct_w> when it quits, BOINC moves it somewhere else, so you don't see it called 'output'

11:41 <PovAdct_w> and as soon as BOINC uploads the file, it gets deleted from the client, so at that point it's not in the client directories at all

11:41 *** mchelen has quit IRC

11:43 <sv2_> i fixed the template.. changed from 'out' to 'output' which is the name of the file in the hello app...

11:44 <sv2_> i then ran the create_work.. using a different name... and i see/saw the workunit appear in the admin page..

11:44 <sv2_> i can paste the client result...

11:44 *** infinisoft has joined #boinc

11:45 <PovAdct_w> maybe the client was running the old workunit (with bad name) again; if a WU fails it gets resent a few more times

11:46 <sv2_> is there a way to 'clear' the client!

11:46 <sv2_> or should i just rebuild the project... and start over..

11:46 <PovAdct_w> well it's not up to the client

11:46 <PovAdct_w> the server is re-sending the task :)

11:47 <PovAdct_w> I think starting over may be a good idea

11:47 <PovAdct_w> naturally, each time you create a project from scratch you make less mistakes than in the previous attempt :)

11:47 <sv2_> slow painful knowledge!!

11:48 <sv2_> and all of this.. to get to the point... where i can try to determine if boinc can actually be used for my overall project..

11:48 <sv2_> oh.. did yo ever get my initial email?@@

11:48 <PovAdct_w> yes

11:48 <PovAdct_w> started replying to it

11:48 <PovAdct_w> and that's when I got one of the power outages

11:49 <sv2_> no prob...

11:49 <sv2_> as i see it... if a boinc client... can call/spawn out to run an external app.. this could work...

11:50 <PovAdct_w> what are your crawler apps written in?

11:50 <PovAdct_w> Python?

11:50 <Romulus> hmm... Python is fairly readable, PovAdct_w

11:50 <PovAdct_w> ...

11:50 * PovAdct_w slaps the bot

11:50 <sv2_> also.. is there a way for the server to give the same work to only a specified number of client machines..

11:51 <PovAdct_w> what do you mean?

11:51 <sv2_> PovAdct_w - the test ones have been python...

11:52 <sv2_> in order for this to work... i envision a table of the urls to be parsed.. a client would attach to the server.. i'd give it a url...

11:52 <sv2_> but i don't need all clients having the same url...

11:52 <PovAdct_w> nope, each workunit would have its own URL

11:52 <PovAdct_w> to crawl

11:52 <sv2_> at the same time.. for qa/err checking..i'd want a few clients to process the same url.. and then compare the results..

11:53 <PovAdct_w> that feature is built into BOINC, a workunit can be replicated X times

11:53 <sv2_> so i'd essentially have to create a separate workunit for each url i'd want to crawl..

11:53 <PovAdct_w> then the validator (which you will surely need to customize) can compare their output files and decide if they match

11:55 <sv2_> i need a bonic guru...

11:55 <sv2_> this would go a helluva lot faster...

11:55 <sv2_> to be able to determine if this damn thing is even feasible!

11:56 <PovAdct_w> I know of something that could help you make the app... will all apps be Python?

11:56 * PovAdct_w knows nothing about Perl

11:57 <sv2_> not sure... the test crawlers have been basic python... using the mach libs..

11:57 <sv2_> mech..

11:58 <PovAdct_w> mech?

11:58 <sv2_> the unfortunate issue.. is that each college is similar.. but different enough.. so that the system will have to have separate crawlers for each school..

11:58 <PovAdct_w> oh python mechanize?

11:58 <sv2_> mechanize.. i python import/lib for crawling/parsing text..

12:08 <PovAdct_w> what did you call the workunit after fixing the template?

12:08 <PovAdct_w> this is all getting harder than it should be -_--

12:08 <sv2_> yes..

12:11 <jackygrahamez> did you look at your logs. specifically file_upload_handler.log

12:11 <sv2_> let me just rebuild the project... and start from scratch...

12:12 <jackygrahamez> under your main project directory there should be some logs generated by your daemons

12:14 <PovAdct_w> BOINC uploads the file when the app finishes successfully, that has yet to happen :)

12:15 <jackygrahamez> did you try running the client using --exit_after_finish

12:15 <PovAdct_w> we already know what the problem is, so...

12:15 <jackygrahamez> whats the problem?

12:15 <PovAdct_w> just gotta get work created with the right open_name for the output file

12:15 <PovAdct_w> and wait for the client to run it

12:15 <PovAdct_w> thing is the queue still has work with the wrong filename

12:15 <PovAdct_w> and the client was running from those

12:16 <jackygrahamez> I thought he canceled it and reset the client

12:16 <PovAdct_w> I dunno if he finally cancelled it
