00:43 <Romulus> MTughan: Error: I couldn't find yaw in airport.

00:43 <MTughan> Okay, I'm not crazy...

00:43 <Rookie_69> Shearwater... Naval Air Base... or whatever.

00:44 <Rookie_69> &airport yhz

00:44 <Romulus> Rookie_69: Halifax, Canada

00:46 <Rookie_69> Saturday night's allright for fighting...

00:48 <Rookie_69> There's a weather station on an island out in the harbour that even Rommie can't find.

00:48 <MTughan> Rommie uses an external service. www.wunderunderground.com IIRC.

00:48 <Rookie_69> I forget it's call sign though.

00:49 <Rookie_69> Mmm... Moody Blues playing. :-)

00:50 * Rookie_69 gets mellow.

00:58 <MTughan> And just like that, my XP partition is gone... :)

01:00 <Rookie_69> I've lost a few partitions too...

01:00 <MTughan> This was intention. Win7 beta is going on it.

01:01 <Rookie_69> I've stopped playing with RAID settings.

01:01 <MTughan> lol

01:02 <MTughan> And this is where it's nice to have two computers... IRC on one while the other one is installing an OS.

01:04 <Rookie_69> I've got a couple of spares lying around... but haven't played much lately.

01:05 <MTughan> Played much with installing OSes?

01:05 <Rookie_69> ... but I did install DOS 6.2 and Win 3.1 on one old box lately.

01:05 <MTughan> Recently? Why did you still have Win 3.1 disks still around?

01:06 <MTughan> Let alone DOS 6.2.

01:06 <Rookie_69> Too lazy to throw them out?

01:06 <MTughan> I'll stop talking... Oldie. :P

01:06 <Rookie_69> I wanted to play an old win game.

01:07 <MTughan> How old, may I ask?

01:08 <Rookie_69> Apparently written in 1989.

01:09 <Rookie_69> That would be nearing twenty.

01:09 <Tidus> yeah, i've got dos 6.22 and wfw3.11, still sealed up

01:09 <Tidus> never been used

01:11 <Rookie_69> Umm... I bought my first computer in 1982, I think. That wasn't yesterday. It used a cassette player as a storage device.

01:13 <Rookie_69> It had a whopping 4 kb of memory, but I quickly traded it for one with 16 kb.

01:13 <efc> for most old games DOSBox is great

01:14 <Tidus> i've got an old vmware machine floating around somewhere that has dos 6.22 and win31

01:14 <Rookie_69> I've used DOSbox or something like it.I forget.

01:19 <Rookie_69> My first foray into DOS was with a used XT box in... late eighties?.. 640 KB and double floppies.

01:20 <Rookie_69> ... 360 k DSDD, I think.

01:21 <Rookie_69> 5 1/4 inch anyways.

01:22 <Rookie_69> Drive the size of your DVD player.

01:24 <MTughan> All right, just finishing Win 7 installation... At least it detected my screen res right. Means it some kind of more advanced driver.

01:29 <MTughan> Good, tab opening in IE is much faster than IE7.

01:29 <Tidus> sad, browser still is as standards incompatible as ie7

01:30 <Rookie_69> MTughan is now officially a beta tester!

01:30 <MTughan> Tidus: Yeah. First download (second site) is Firefox.

01:30 <Tidus> lol

01:30 <Tidus> i just upgraded in place from vista

01:31 <Tidus> so chrome is still there for me

01:31 <MTughan> I made sure I unplugged my Vista drive to force a clean install. No telling what a Microsoft installer can do.

01:31 <MTughan> Aero's working off the bat though, so there are some drivers that are working just fine.

01:32 <Tidus> yeah, both amd and nvidia have their beta video drivers in windows update and on the cd

01:32 <MTughan> Although they didn't work for you?

01:32 <Tidus> i tried to change them

01:33 <MTughan> There's one thing I can complain off the bat though. Holding your mouse over the icons in the toolbars takes too long to pop up the window list.

01:33 <Tidus> i've turned off superbar

01:33 <MTughan> It'd get in the way of a power user.

01:33 <Tidus> reverted it to the vista behavior

01:34 <MTughan> I'll see what there is afterwards. Just running a performance check while FF downloads.

01:34 <Tidus> but clicking on the button brings em up instantly

01:34 <Tidus> and it shows a visual cue as to how many windows the app has open

01:34 <MTughan> That's more clicking that should be necessary.

01:34 <MTughan> than*

01:36 <Tidus> eh, gets the job done

01:37 <MTughan> Dammit, I love these graphics... W7 upped the "Windows Experience Index" max from 5.9 to 7.9. My graphics scored top marks in both. xD

01:38 <Tidus> mine refuses to run the bench :P

01:38 <MTughan> Well, I can tell they're proper drivers at least, to show those high numbers.

01:43 <Tidus> my machine gets a .... OUCH!!! 2.0

01:43 <Tidus> was a 4.5 on vista

01:43 <MTughan> In graphics?

01:43 <Tidus> wt crap happened

01:43 <Tidus> processor 4.4 memory 4.5 graphics 4.7 gaming graphics 4.5 primary hard disk 2.0

01:43 <Tidus> that aint right...

01:44 <MTughan> CPU: 7.3; Memory: 7.3; Graphics: 7.9; Gaming graphics: 6.8; Disk: 5.4

01:44 <Tidus> brb, i'm gonna check something

01:45 <MTughan> I wonder how long it will take before the i7's DDR3 RAM scores less than the max... xD

01:45 <MTughan> Because this is DDR2-1066 RAM.

01:45 <Tidus> oh. figured it out. requires a reboot to fix.

01:45 <Tidus> brb

01:50 <Rookie_69> Hmm... Nearing 3 am here and all the beer's gone... I guess it's bedtime.

01:50 <Rookie_69> NN.

01:50 <MTughan> Night.

01:50 *** Rookie_69 has left #boinc

01:52 *** yoyo[RKN] has joined #boinc

01:52 <MTughan> 'lo yoyo

01:53 <yoyo[RKN]> moin

01:53 <Tidus> k, can't be fixed without causing yet another blue screen loop

01:55 <MTughan> Well, you can send feedback. It's at the top of every window. :P

01:55 <Tidus> ya lol

01:55 <MTughan> Tidus and I are discussing the Windows 7 beta.

01:57 * yoyo[RKN] does not like beta's of Windows

02:00 <Tidus> yeah, that's one thing i already reported to them... remove that stinking link.

02:00 <Tidus> it's on the desktop, that's enough places

02:02 <MTughan> It's in the Start Menu too.

02:04 <FreeLarry58> windows 7 beta is that another name for vista

02:04 <MTughan> Vista++.

02:04 <MTughan> In theory anyway...

02:04 <FreeLarry58> lol think vista more like windows 7 alpha

02:04 <MTughan> I notice some tasks are speedier, but I'll probably notice some good and bad things in the next couple days.

02:05 <MTughan> WTF? Adobe Reader wants a restart...

02:05 <MTughan> Well, I have a bigger program that'll want a restart too, and it warrants it.

02:05 <FreeLarry58> sometimes it does

02:06 *** PAPatriot1776 has quit IRC

02:12 <Tidus> i like the ability to just drag a window to the top of the screen to maximize

02:12 <MTughan> Ah, that's interesting...

02:12 <Tidus> try dragging to the left or right edge

02:13 <MTughan> I saw it at the keynote too... Drag to either side, and it puts it to half the window.

02:13 <MTughan> Someone has already said on a forum that they should make dragging to the bottom minimize a window. :P

02:13 <Tidus> yeah lol

02:14 *** PAPatriot1776 has joined #boinc

02:15 <Tidus> but the half screen sizing comes in handy for folder management

02:15 <MTughan> Yeah. The example used was comparing cameras at two websites.

02:15 <Tidus> oh

02:15 <Tidus> you know that 10 or so pixel dead space at the right end of the taskbar?

02:16 <Tidus> hover over it

02:16 <MTughan> Aero Snap, is it called? I know.

02:16 <MTughan> Click it.

02:16 <Tidus> it's a minimize all when you click it

02:16 <MTughan> Replaces the Show Desktop shortcut in XP. Don't know if I saw it in Vista.

02:16 <Tidus> in vista, it's the first item in your quicklaunch

02:17 <Tidus> it's there

02:17 <Tidus> just different icon

02:17 <MTughan> Ooh, cool... Minimize a window, open its preview, then hover over the preview.

02:17 <Tidus> oh nice

02:17 <MTughan> I could see that being useful.

02:18 <Tidus> yeah that could be

02:18 <MTughan> brb

02:19 <Tidus> k

02:19 <Tidus> you can hover the previews even when its not minimzied

02:19 <Tidus> s/minimzied minimized

02:19 <Tidus> s/.../... ... blah ... cant ... type ...asjdl;fkjasd;lkf

02:19 <MTughan> Ah, okay.

02:20 <MTughan> I just noticed it when I had all the windows minimized and was trying to bring them back.

02:20 <Tidus> it works even on non-minimized windows

02:20 <MTughan> Yep.

02:21 <Tidus> and on the preview, there's also a close button

02:21 <Tidus> which closes the window

02:22 <MTughan> Yeah, I saw it. Hadn't tried it out.

02:22 <Tidus> it closes the window attached to the preview

02:22 <Tidus> thoughtful touches

02:22 <MTughan> Or tab, in the case of IE. I believe anyway.

02:22 <MTughan> Oh yeah, IE tabs show up as multiple windows, at least in the default view.

02:23 <MTughan> I haven't tried with the mixed 7/Vista view which I like.

02:23 <Tidus> ie tabs show up as windwos in the preview

02:23 <Tidus> the close button closes the tab

02:23 <MTughan> That's what I was saying...

02:24 <Tidus> and in the mixed taskbar mode, the buttons still show the preview windows

02:24 <Tidus> i have my taskbar reverted to 'vista mode'

02:24 <Tidus> but it'll still show all the preview window stuffs, all the controls, yaddayadda

02:25 <MTughan> Nice.

02:26 <Tidus> what i like is the aero taskbar on 7 is actually glass colored

02:26 <Tidus> not black with just a hint of transparency

02:26 <Tidus> and the autohide shows that fact

02:28 <MTughan> The boot time seems to be quicker.

02:28 <Tidus> yes, it is much quicker

02:29 <Tidus> and they finally fixed that useless disk defragmenter

02:29 <Tidus> similar functionality to xp now

02:30 <Tidus> fairly quick too

02:30 <Tidus> and actual run speed seems to be snappier too

02:31 <Tidus> it just feels less 'sluggish' than vista

02:31 <MTughan> I've got to see something... How much RAM is being used.

02:31 <Tidus> my experiences are about 25-30% less than vista

02:31 <MTughan> Looks like at 40% less.

02:32 <MTughan> 1.1GB of 8GB leaves lots of room.

02:32 <Tidus> so almost back to the xp realm

02:32 <MTughan> Except proper 64-bit. :D

02:32 <Tidus> i meant mem use wise

02:32 <MTughan> Yeah.

02:32 <Tidus> cold boot, with everything loaded that i had in vista, would use nearly 700mb ram

02:33 <Tidus> in win7 it uses just a tick under 500

02:33 <MTughan> Biggest user here is svchost at 100MB. After that, it's explorer at 32MB.

02:34 <Tidus> svchost here uses 55mb, yahoo messenger at 44, explorer at 25, dwm.exe at 22

02:34 <MTughan> I wonder why mine is using about twice as much...

02:35 <Tidus> 64 bit maybe?

02:35 <MTughan> Whoa... Video driver update didn't require a restart!

02:35 <Tidus> nope

02:35 <Tidus> they sure dont

02:35 <Tidus> they finally got that framework that vista tried to introduce correct

02:35 <MTughan> Doing network updates now...

02:36 <MTughan> No restart there either.

02:36 <Tidus> so if i see ya blip out, i know why?

02:36 <Tidus> found a cosmetic bug...

02:36 <MTughan> If you see me blip out, that's more worrisome. This is a Linux machine.

02:36 <Tidus> a 100% progress bar only fills 98% of its space

02:36 <MTughan> Heh.

02:37 <Tidus> purely cosmetic

02:38 <Tidus> oh, found a very weird program compatibility issue

02:38 <MTughan> Hmm... The NTP service doesn't come started.

02:38 <Tidus> you're aware of how old version 7 of nero burning rom is don't you?

02:39 <MTughan> Yes.

02:39 <Tidus> roxio creator 2009, refuses to run on win7

02:39 <Tidus> it crashes right otu

02:39 <Tidus> out

02:39 <Tidus> nero 7 ... still runs, works

02:39 <MTughan> lol

02:40 <Tidus> yeah, i found it weird

02:41 <Tidus> that's the only compatibility issue i had

02:42 <Tidus> and i had to repair-install windows live again

02:42 <Tidus> because messenger was acting weird

02:42 <MTughan> There was one program where I had to force its installer into Vista mode, but it worked fine after installation.

02:42 <Tidus> well, you'd probably notice a few more compatibility bugs than i would on that front

02:42 <Tidus> you did a clean install, i in-place upgraded from vista

02:42 <MTughan> Yeah.

02:43 <Tidus> it's been surprisingly stable for me

02:43 <MTughan> I seem to have an odd issue every so often... It happened with Vista too. Once in a while, after a reboot, it doesn't seem to activate my USB keyboard.

02:44 <MTughan> Unplugging it and putting it back in fixed it, although it gets annoying.

02:44 <MTughan> fixes*

02:44 <Tidus> don't have that problem with mine

02:44 <Tidus> i'd call that a bios issue, not an OS issue

02:44 <MTughan> It only happens once in a while too. I think it's a hardware issue, yeah.

02:44 <MTughan> It's also plugged into a USB hub, so that can be another source of problems.

02:44 <Tidus> yeah

02:44 <Tidus> not enough power

02:45 <MTughan> It's a powered hub, so I'm not worried about that.

02:45 <Tidus> try plugging straight into the tower itself

02:47 <Tidus> oh, here's one cosmetic thing i did notice about the taskbar if it's in regular vista-button mode

02:48 <Tidus> notice there's a small space between buttons of different programs, but if they're the same program, it looks like one large button with a small divider, but no physical space

02:49 <MTughan> Oh yeah, I see it.

02:49 <MTughan> That looks like it was intentional.

02:49 <Tidus> i'm betting it was

02:50 <Tidus> an at-a-glance look at how many windows a certain program has open maybe?

02:50 <MTughan> Keeps the program buttons together.

02:50 <Tidus> well, even xp grouped an applications buttons together

02:50 <Tidus> so did vista

02:50 <MTughan> Yeah, although this graphically associates them too.

02:51 <Tidus> yeah, which is a good thing

02:53 <Tidus> so any other neat features that you've found noteworthy?

02:54 <MTughan> Not yet, just been installing other programs I need/want.

02:54 <Tidus> they finally moved screen resolution setting to the right click menu

02:54 <Tidus> but most lcd users just jank it all the way up anyways

02:54 <MTughan> Dunno that I'd call this neat, but a lot of Windows applications use the "Ribbon" interface now.

02:55 <Tidus> yeah, even paint uses ribbons]

02:55 <MTughan> I find them more unintuitive, but maybe that's just me.

02:55 <Tidus> eh, it's not too bad

02:55 <Tidus> screen space hog, but that's about i9t

02:55 <Tidus> it *

02:56 <MTughan> Now I thought WMP and some others weren't going to be included by default, but available for download?

02:56 <Tidus> media player is default

02:56 <Tidus> but stuff like mail, movie maker, etc... are part of hte live essentials pack

02:57 <MTughan> Ah yeah, those aren't here... But Windows Media Center?

02:57 <Tidus> still built in

02:57 <MTughan> I know, but why?

02:57 <Tidus> too much work to separate it

03:02 <MTughan> Also, with the windows grouped under the same application: the "highlight" travels across the separation too.

03:05 <MTughan> I found a bug... W7 doesn

03:05 <MTughan> ..'t seem to support hot-plugged SATA drives.

03:05 <MTughan> Vista does fine.

03:07 <MTughan> Oh, might help if I connected the other end of the eSATA cable to the computer... :)

03:08 <Tidus> yeah l.ol

03:08 <Tidus> that might help you out some

03:09 <MTughan> It might, and it might not help me out... Still doesn't see the drive.

03:09 <Tidus> yep, and one thing i noticed about the 'highlight' ... the main program window of an app, say yahoo messenger, is just slightly a different color than its 'child' windows

03:11 <Tidus> yahoo messenger, PuTTY, handbrakecli, google chrome, and the task manager = 0.99gb

16:39 <PovAddict> chrome is stupidly using custom titlebars (hate it for it) and other drawing

16:39 <Tidus> or netgear just uses some really wanky html

16:41 <Tidus> PovAddict: what i like about the window management in 7 is you can 'split-screen' two windows by dragging it to the left edge or right edge, both will be tiled to half screen

16:41 <PovAddict> I saw that in an official video

16:41 <Tidus> or you can drag it to the top edge to maximize

16:41 <PovAddict> that's much more usable than the stupid "tile horizontally" thing in the context menu of the taskbar

16:41 <Tidus> or shake one window to minimize the rest

16:42 <Tidus> there's also a 10px dead space on the right end of the taskbar for you to hover on / click on

16:42 <Tidus> hovering makes all windows transparent temporarily, useful if you have a gadget running on the desktop ya wanna check
