IRC logs of #boinc for Friday, 2009-03-06

00:10 *** sigmund has joined #boinc

00:12 <jasong> I've always been curious about making things with "exotic" materials.  Like how much improvement could someone get if their coolers were made out of industrial diamonds?

00:15 <jasong> Can irc bans be given time limits?

00:15 <jasong> I mean, is it something that's done frequently?

00:16 <jasong> I was banned from a chatroom, then, without anyone talking to me, I'm suddenly able to get on 5 days later

00:19 <MTughan> jasong: Channel bans are normally permanent, but they can be released very quickly, and there's usually a limit on how many bans a channel can have. So once that limit is filled, older bans will be released.

00:19 <MTughan> Were you banned, and then kicked right afterwards?

00:23 <jasong> Well, I think it was a combination kickban, but five days later I'm suddenly able to get on and nobody seems to be mentioning anything about it

00:23 <jasong> I really like the channel, so I'm not going to mention it there, but I'm a bit confused as to what happened

00:23 <MTughan> Usually, when an op wants to kick someone from a channel, but not have them come back, he/she will apply a ban, kick the person, then after a couple seconds, release the ban.

00:24 <MTughan> That prevents any auto-rejoin scripts from bringing the person right back into the channel. wdsmia has a macro'd command for an automatic two second ban, and a kick.

00:24 <jasong> Well, I know the ban was in place a couple days ago, so it lasted at least 72 hours

00:25 <MTughan> Wow, that's a long ban then...

00:25 <jasong> I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth, but from a technical standpoint I'm a bit confused

00:26 <MTughan> You could always ask politely why you were banned.

00:26 <jasong> I know why I was banned

00:26 <MTughan> Any decent op will tell you why, and then you can avoid doing it.

00:27 <jasong> They claimed I made a homophobic slur.  I really like being a member of the website, so I only complained a couple times.

00:28 <jasong> I honestly thought it was a permanent ban, I was going to drop the issue so as not to piss anyone off

00:28 <MTughan> What did you saw?

00:28 <MTughan> say*

00:29 <jasong> I got agitated by the Milk Grammy acceptance speech, so I freaked and posted a message about how Christians don't hate gays, they just think it's a really harmful choice

00:29 *** sigmund_ has quit IRC

00:29 <jasong> I shouldn't have posted it at all, but I don't think it was homophobic

00:29 <MTughan> No, I agree... I don't see how it was homophobic.

00:30 <MTughan> Because you're not saying being gay is a harmful choice, just that people think it is.

00:30 <MTughan> Although I suppose it's a delicate issue.

00:30 <jasong> we're getting a major cultural divide in this country(USA), and it keeps getting bigger

00:31 <MTughan> Gah, freezing rain outside...

00:31 <jasong> There are things going on in other states that are scaring the crap out of Bible Belt people, and vice-versa

00:32 <MTughan> The problem is that people don't accept someone very different from them. Many people just think it's their way, or you f*** off.

00:32 <MTughan> But people have different points of view, and you have to respect that.

00:32 <MTughan> Note that I'm not implicating you specifically. :P

00:34 <jasong> I know, although I'm sure that a lot of people would simply label me a bigot so they don't have to think of me as a human being

00:34 <MTughan> A bigot is still a human...

00:35 <jasong> Yeah, true

00:36 <jasong> When one person bases their values on the idea that a guy was nailed to a tree, died, and came back to life, there tends to be friction with people who don't agree.

00:36 <MTughan> True.

00:37 <jasong> and, of course, there a corollaries to Islam

00:38 <jasong> Suicide bombers seem sub-human to a lot of people, but it makes perfect sense to millions of people

00:38 <MTughan> Yeah, I know. I can't imagine myself doing that, but I'm sure I've been raised differently than many Islamics.

00:39 *** infinisoft has quit IRC

00:40 <jasong> Holy wars are nasty things, when it has to do with property or traditions, it tends to be okay to lose, but Holy Wars can be fought until the last soldier.

00:42 <jasong> The really hard thing is that the Crusades are directly comparable to what's going on now.  War doesn't seem stupid until a few years or decades later

00:43 <MTughan> Like the Iraq war?

00:44 <jasong> oh, yeah

00:44 <jasong> The Iraq war should never have happened

00:44 <jasong> I was one of the losers who wanted it, but it was a really bad idea

00:45 <jasong> And the Saudis are the real problem from what I hear, but they have all that oil

00:46 <jasong> I think global warming is a sham to get people to go green

00:46 <MTughan> And the oil companies resist any change they can't profit from.

00:46 <MTughan> No, I don't think it's a sham, despite the cold weather we've been having.

00:46 <jasong> Well, I've heard the oil companies are majorly investing in green technologies, so somebody's planning stuff we don't know about

00:47 <MTughan> You mean hydrogen?

00:47 <jasong> Not necessarily hydrogen, I'm sure there's billions of research going on to explore options

00:47 <jasong> Personally, I like the idea of cars being powered with compressed air

00:48 <MTughan> One change I'm talking about... Saturn developed a practical electric car in the early 90's. What happened to it?

00:48 <jasong> It was too expensive

00:48 <MTughan> People were willing to pay for it.

00:48 <jasong> true

00:49 <jasong> One thing I'm excited about is carbon nanotubes, if we can icrease production about a 1000-fold, we can use them to make super-capacitor batteries

00:50 <jasong> They're discovering ways to use carbon nanotubes just about every week that goes by

00:51 <jasong> And they're constantly tweaking the production method to make it faster or more efficient

00:51 <jasong> At the moment, I think they're up to about 50 grams an hour for high quality nanotubes

00:51 <MTughan> I believe they're also talking about using carbon nanotubes for small scale water cooling for processors.

00:52 <jasong> Yeah, but at the moment it's just going to scientists.  They need to increase production a huge amount before they'd be used to cool stuff

00:52 <jasong> The horrible thing is how do you dispose of carbon nanotubes?

00:53 <jasong> The pollution problem is going to be horrendous in a few decades

00:53 <jasong> It would be like if you could make cars out of diamonds.  But what would you do when it came time to dispose of the car?

01:06 <jasong> Hey, what's a good place to calculate the wattage of a system?

01:07 <MTughan> There's no standard way to measure it, as the components are all different, and it depends on system load.

01:07 <jasong> I'm trying to figure out if I should keep my quad-core and get a new computer, or ditch the guts and replace it with something new

01:07 <MTughan> You can always try and find something like a Kill-A-Watt to measure the usage.

01:08 <jasong> It's a Q6600 cpu, I'm not sure if it's still a good idea, in terms of wattage to crunching

01:08 <MTughan> What stepping?

01:09 <jasong> Good question, I don't know much about that kind of stuff

01:09 <MTughan> Do you have CPU-Z?

01:09 <jasong> ah, good idea, give me a few minutes

01:10 <MTughan> Which CPU-Z has a field called Stepping, that's not really the CPU stepping. It's actually the Revision field you're looking for.

01:19 <jasong> Yeah, cpu-z is an executable, and wine doesn't seem to be a package for some reason.  I'll need to fight with it at some point, but not right now

01:20 <MTughan> Oh, you're using Linux?

01:20 <jasong> yeah

01:20 <jasong> I couldn't find a linux cpu-z

01:20 <MTughan> "cat /proc/cpuinfo" might tell you.

01:20 <MTughan> It'll be either B3 or G0.

01:20 <jasong> lol, I'd forgotten about that

01:22 <jasong> I'm not sure how to read it, it just seems to be giving me numbers in all the categories

01:24 <MTughan> Hmm, so does mine, at least in the virtual machine...

01:27 <MTughan> jasong: Is the cpu_family 6, and the model 15?

01:29 <jasong> yes

01:29 <MTughan> And what is the stepping? 7 or 11?

01:29 <jasong> 7

01:30 <MTughan> Then you have the older B3 stepping processor.

01:30 <MTughan> I have the G0.

01:30 <MTughan> The B3's were slightly worse overclockers, but they did have a higher TDP than the G0 stepping did.

01:30 <MTughan> 105W compared to 95W.

01:31 <jasong> hmmm, pretty close

01:31 <jasong> so it's worthwhile to keep it running?

01:31 <jasong> We only pay about 6.25 cents a kilowatt

01:32 <MTughan> You could probably get the same level of performance with a slightly lower wattage from a comparable 45nm processor, assuming you haven't overclocked it.

01:32 <MTughan> What do you use it for anyway? BOINC or other stuff?

01:32 <jasong> Almost 100% boinc

01:33 <jasong> I'll stop the crunching when I play runescape, but otherwise it's full boinc

01:33 <MTughan> Then while you'd get lower power usage from a dual core, that's probably not what you want. :P

01:33 <jasong> lol, true

01:34 <MTughan> Here's a list of the 45nm quads on Newegg:

01:34 <Romulus> <> (at

01:36 <MTughan> I believe the Q6600 quads are usually compared to the Q9300 or Q9400 Yorkfields.

01:36 <jasong> thanks for the link

01:36 <jasong> I'm gonna go get something to eat, then I'll check the link

01:36 <MTughan> K.

01:37 <MTughan> While the Yorkfield quad-cores aren't the newest, they're relatively cheap, and since you have a Q6600 already, it means that you probably already have a motherboard that can support it.

01:41 *** Eythan has quit IRC

01:46 *** Eythan has joined #boinc

01:57 <MTughan> jasong: Hmm, maybe I shouldn't say they use less power... I think they do, but the TDP is the same as my Q6600.

01:58 <MTughan> So if you're looking for power consumption... What video card do you have?

01:58 <MTughan> Also, what power supply? PSU efficiency can really start to make a hit on power consumption at high levels.

02:02 <MTughan> Well, I'll give you my numbers, maybe you can do something with them...

02:03 <MTughan> I've got a Q6600 G0, with a Radeon HD4870 and a PC Power and Cooling 750W.

02:04 <MTughan> I believe with the CPU around 2.8GHz, I saw 400W from the wall with both the CPU and GPU under full load: CPU from Prime95, and the GPU from ATITool.

02:04 <MTughan> That number will be a little bit higher now as I'm running 3.26GHz on the CPU, but maybe 20W higher overall.

02:05 <MTughan> Since your CPU is similar, take off probably about 40W or so, and then try to adapt for your graphics card.

02:05 <MTughan> My PSU gets around low- to mid-80% efficiency around that wattage area if I remember. You'll have to look up yours to figure out how efficient it is.

02:06 <MTughan> But I have to be off to bed... Hope that helps.

15:01 <PovAddict> jackygrahamez: the wrapper doesn't start the screensaver

15:02 <jackygrahamez> Hmm how about Integrating code for starting screensavers into the wapper?

15:03 <PovAddict> the wrapper has nothing to do with graphics

15:03 <PovAddict> the science app has nothing to do with graphics; except it provides information for the screensaver to display

15:03 <PovAddict> the *client* starts the screensaver

15:03 <PovAddict> you can't (shouldn't) make the wrapper start the screensaver (when would it start it?)

15:08 <jackygrahamez> uc2 with graphics creates a screensaver, can we use that same code as part of a wrapper?

15:09 <Tank_Master> hey der jacky

15:09 <jackygrahamez> hey tanky

15:09 <jackygrahamez> :-)

15:09 <Tank_Master> :)

15:09 <PovAddict> the screensaver is a *separate* application

15:09 <PovAddict> and having a wrapper or not is irrelevant

15:10 <jackygrahamez> so does anyone running wrappers have custom screen savers?

15:10 <PovAddict> huh

15:10 <PovAddict> I just said it's irrelevant

15:11 <PovAddict> screensavers are made the same way whether you use a wrapper or not

15:11 <PovAddict> it's a separate independent program

15:12 <jackygrahamez> Then how do I get there? I'm trying to figure out based on what I know. I'm looking at the code from the uc2...

15:12 <PovAddict> you should be looking at uc2_graphics

15:13 <PovAddict> the

15:13 <PovAddict> you compile the graphics app separately, send it with the logical name "graphics_app", and it works

15:14 <PovAddict> you don't need to do anything with the science app code, or the wrapper

15:14 <jackygrahamez> alas I don't have the code for this else can I trigger it to run or is it impossible???

15:14 <MTughan> Soul_keeper, Fwerp:

15:15 <PovAddict> the screensaver app has only one requirement

15:15 <PovAddict> it must open a closeable *window* with the graphics; unless --fullscreen is passed in the command line, then it should show graphics fullscreen

15:15 <PovAddict> that is all

15:15 <PovAddict> it doesn't need any BOINC API function call or anything

15:18 <jackygrahamez> you don't need the job file reference, if you rename it graphics_app

15:18 <PovAddict> the job file is a wrapper feature

15:18 <PovAddict> so it's irrelevant for the graphics

15:18 <jackygrahamez> ok I thought you had to write the graphics into the main app

15:19 <PovAddict> [18:14] <PovAddict> you don't need to do anything with the science app code, or the wrapper

15:20 <Tank_Master> so how does one wrap the scienc code around the graphic? :P

16:02 <MTughan> Yeah, I saw the link zombie_67. You're wanting me to compile the app?

16:02 <Soul_keeper> sadly i might have to port it myself to get one

16:03 <Soul_keeper> i could port it, i'd just need to know more about the project, not even sure what mw does

16:04 <Soul_keeper> i guess it does math on some kind of packet of sky coordinates/readings ...

16:05 <MTughan> BTW, the compiler of the optimized Linux apps says that he just uses the standard source.

16:05 *** sigmund has quit IRC

16:05 <MTughan> I would presume the compiler of the GPU app customized the code, but I haven't seen the code for that.

16:06 <Soul_keeper> yeah just a matter of throwing in the stream headers, and switching around a few types

16:06 <Soul_keeper> i can't find the GPU app source

16:06 <zombie_67> MT: yes please.  but no need yet.  He doesn't even have the new windows version published yet.

16:06 <Soul_keeper> the guy seems to hide it

16:06 <Soul_keeper> probably have to e-mail him for it

16:07 <MTughan> Ask him for it then. MW is released under the GPL, and because he's distributing the binaries, he's legally obligated to provide the source on request.

17:15 <Soul_keeper> hmmm pthreads isn't as powerfull as i thought

17:15 <Soul_keeper> i can't just call 3 different functions and have them all run forever

17:15 <Soul_keeper> it sits and waits for the first one to finish

17:23 <CoderForLife> that doesn't sound right Soul_keeper

17:26 *** zombie_67 has quit IRC

17:28 <PovAddict> Soul_keeper: you're doing it wrong then

17:28 <PovAddict> you can create three threads and pass those three functions as their entry points

17:29 <Soul_keeper> pthread_attr_setdetachstate(&attr, PTHREAD_CREATE_DETACHED);

17:30 <PovAddict> what's the third parameter of pthread_create?

17:30 <Soul_keeper> some junk

17:30 <PovAddict> I bet the documentation doesn't say "some junk"

17:30 <Soul_keeper> that's a function that's being called

17:31 <Soul_keeper> that's the actual thread itself

17:31 <PovAddict> you're calling cputenminute(cores, cpufrequency, cpuarray1, minutearray, minutearray2, walltime) and, when it finishes, passing the result to pthread_create

17:31 <Soul_keeper> it should never finish

17:31 <Soul_keeper> it's got a continuous loop

17:32 <Soul_keeper> i need to issue 3 instances just like that in a row

17:32 <PovAddict> read what I just said... the way you're calling it, the thread will be created right after the function finishes
