00:02 <jasong> Have you ever noticed that when you read a "professional" journalist's piece about something you know a lot about, they inevitably have tons of errors in the article?
00:03 <jasong> I just read a comment by someone claiming that if you send an image to the brain, you have to invert it so the person sees the image right-side up
00:03 <Soul_keeper> that's kinda true ...
00:03 <jasong> No, wrong, the person simply takes the image they've always had and starts dealing with it as an infant. They simply accept it as reality
00:04 <jasong> Try nudging the side of your eyeball, you'll see a weird shadow on the other side of your vision
00:04 <Soul_keeper> they had a thing about that on the science channel, they made some goggles that invert everything, and tryed to get geniouses to play basketball
00:04 <jasong> Well, not your eyeball, nudge your eyelid
00:05 <Soul_keeper> they'd bounce the ball and it would hit them in he forehead
00:05 <jasong> lol, very entertaining, I'm sure, but hardly proves anything
00:06 <Soul_keeper> they claim that if you wear them long enough eventually everything would appear the same or something
00:06 <jasong> exactly
00:06 <jasong> Well, it would appear normal
00:07 <efc> I think this galatica falling apart thing is a little far fetched

00:08 <jasong> The Cylons I mean
00:09 <Soul_keeper> i remember when they used to make pci cards with 600MHz transmeta cpu's on them, could never get them in the US tho
00:09 <jasong> MY friend Chuck said the Golden gate bridge was in the background when they arrived
00:09 <efc> It was toasted in a war 2,000 years before "now"
00:09 <jasong> What, so the show happens in the year 4000?
00:09 <efc> "now" in the show's chronology
00:10 <efc> I think in reality the planet would be livable after 2,000 years, but whatever..
00:15 <jasong> I'm confused as to what this news story was written for, do they expect the telescopes to make baby telescopes
00:16 <jasong> I mean, there's some info in there, but there seems to be some odd romantic notions going on that I can't fathom
00:16 <Fwerp> how about apache api that programs applictions from flow charts

13:19 <yoyo[RKN]> if i have a 64bit windows running a 32bit boinc client, do I get 64bit applications from the projects?
13:19 <PovAddict> no
13:19 <PovAddict> maybe you should be able to...
13:20 <PovAddict> but if you have 64bit OS, you have no reason not to get 64bit BOINC ;)
13:20 <yoyo[RKN]> the question was raised yesterday in our team chat,
13:20 <yoyo[RKN]> because there are 32 and 64bit boinc for linux and win, but only one version for Mac
13:21 <MTughan> The Mac version is a universal binary, with PPC, i386, and x86_64 builds in it.
13:21 <PovAddict> the Mac binary is three (or four) versions in one
13:21 <MTughan> Ah... Two actually? WTF?
13:21 <MTughan> I just have i386 and ppc in mine.
13:21 <PovAddict> huh
13:22 <yoyo[RKN]> and how to get a 64bit app for mac than?
13:22 <MTughan> 6.2.18.
13:22 <MTughan> yoyo[RKN]: That's a very good question, unless the i386 build detects 64-bit correctly.
13:23 <yoyo[RKN]> is there a project with 64bit mac clients other than milkyway?
13:23 <MTughan> Ah, that's how...
13:23 <PovAddict> supposedly " The BOINC client for the Mac has executables for 3 architectures in a single file: PowerPC, 32-bit Intel and 64-bit Intel"
13:23 <MTughan> The manager is i386 and ppc only, but the CC is all three.
13:24 <yoyo[RKN]> CC=boinc.exe ?
13:24 <yoyo[RKN]> core client

14:57 <FreeLarry> howdy for short time
14:58 <FreeLarry> i see predictor has been moved to retired projects at BS - ouch it cost me close to 350K in credit
14:58 <FreeLarry> but this time not just on the hosts stats but main stats :(
14:58 <FreeLarry> host stats haven't reflectd lose yet
14:59 <FreeLarry> PovAddict what does sms stand for?
14:59 <PovAddict> short message service

15:01 <MTughan> Wow, I lost credit today too...
15:01 <CoderForLife> I doubled your temp
15:01 <FreeLarry> blah don't what to se rest
15:01 <MTughan> Just looking at the projects I was attached to, I see a couple missing...
15:01 <FreeLarry> only one i noticed MTughan was predictor - what else?
15:02 * FreeLarry waiting for NQeen to show in stats for me
15:02 <FreeLarry> NQueen
15:02 <MTughan> WEP-M+2, TSP, Superlink@Technion, and Ramsey@Home are all missing for me.
15:03 *** siofwolves has joined #boinc
15:03 <FreeLarry> ahh tsp didn't notice but had a few there to that will be gone then - as well as superlink
15:03 <MTughan> I don't think it's TSP that accounts for it... I didn't have a lot there.
15:04 <MTughan> I'd be willing to bet it was Ramsey that was the big one for me.
15:04 <yoyo[RKN]> MTughan : did you have any success with gmp-ecm?
15:04 <FreeLarry> -363,218 what reflected for credit yesterday for me thats after the normal 20K earned
15:05 <MTughan> No other way I can make 43K on other projects and still be down about 4K credits yesterday.
15:05 <MTughan> yoyo[RKN]: Not yet, been busy with other stuff. I wasn't able to compile the BOINC API before either, so at least that's done.
15:05 <FreeLarry> well tca gots to go
15:06 <yoyo[RKN]> ok
15:07 <MTughan> Gonna give it another shot now...
15:08 <CoderForLife> tc FreeLarry
15:10 <CoderForLife> bbiab
15:19 <MTughan> WTF? I get an error saying a .a file is not of the right architecture when linking via make...
15:19 <MTughan> But if I link the .o files in the .a directly, it links just fine.
15:19 <MTughan> Sounds like a linker bug if you ask me.
15:22 <MTughan> yoyo[RKN]: Any tests I should do?
15:23 <yoyo[RKN]> do you have a ecm binary?
15:23 <MTughan> For Intel 32-bit, yes.
15:23 <yoyo[RKN]> wait
15:27 <yoyo[RKN]> download this file http://www.rechenkraft.net/yoyo/download/379/ecm_es_1236344282_2_1680P.C197_140_inp
15:27 <yoyo[RKN]> rename it to 'in'
15:29 <MTughan> And then just run ecm?
15:29 <yoyo[RKN]> wait,
15:29 <yoyo[RKN]> ecm -v -nn -timestamp -chkpnt checkpnt -inp in 11000000
15:30 <MTughan> Running now. How long should it take, approximately?
15:30 <yoyo[RKN]> 15mi
15:30 <yoyo[RKN]> n
15:31 <MTughan> Okay.
15:31 <yoyo[RKN]> in the last 2 min it consums most memory
15:31 <MTughan> I've got 600MB free.
15:32 <yoyo[RKN]> it consumes no more than 300
15:32 <MTughan> We'll be fine then.
15:32 <yoyo[RKN]> it's a small one
15:33 <yoyo[RKN]> I have some which runs 10h on a 32bit and consumes 2GB in last 20% of the runtime
15:33 <MTughan> Heh. That's the total memory of this machine.
15:33 <yoyo[RKN]> than boinc would probably not download it
15:34 <yoyo[RKN]> in your run it just print to stdout
15:37 <MTughan> Apparently just finished step 1...
15:38 <yoyo[RKN]> there it should print out the memory esimation
15:38 <MTughan> 199M
15:39 <MTughan> Completed. What do you want for output?
15:39 <yoyo[RKN]> the whole stdout
15:39 <MTughan> Any files?
15:39 <yoyo[RKN]> no, only stdout
15:40 <MTughan> K. Is pastebin fine?
15:40 <yoyo[RKN]> jup
15:40 <Romulus> Title: pastebin - collaborative debugging tool (at pastebin.com)
15:42 <MTughan> This can probably be optimized more if need be. I'm not using SSEx or processor specific features yet.
15:42 <yoyo[RKN]> the output looks fine
15:54 <MTughan> Attempting a run with a recompiled SSE build.
15:55 <MTughan> Rebuilt libgmp too, it passed all checks.
15:55 <MTughan> No neccessarily. They could be lesbian too. ;)
15:55 <MTughan> Not*
16:05 <MTughan> yoyo[RKN]: SSE slightly raised run time (step 2 took 10 seconds longer than before), but lowered estimated memory usage from 199M to 127M.
16:06 <yoyo[RKN]> oh, was not aware that sse influences memory requirements
16:07 <MTughan> It's possible that was tree vectorization too. I turned that on, along with pushing -O1 to -O2.
16:08 <Romulus> Title: pastebin - collaborative debugging tool (at pastebin.com)
16:08 <MTughan> Namely, the first line.
16:10 <yoyo[RKN]> can you configure it with --enable-asm-redc
16:10 <MTughan> ECM or GMP?
16:10 <yoyo[RKN]> good question
16:11 <yoyo[RKN]> ECM
16:11 <MTughan> Should I also do --enable-sse2? Right now I'm doing it through GCC flags.
16:12 <yoyo[RKN]> yes
16:12 <MTughan> All right, reconfiguring now... I'll let you know the results after it's done...
16:13 <MTughan> "configure: error: asm redc exists only for x86_64 and recent x86"
16:13 <yoyo[RKN]> so no asm-redc
16:13 <yoyo[RKN]> :(
16:14 <MTughan> Well, it's odd. The only x86 processor I could possibly compiling for would be the Core Solo, Core Duo, or any Core 2.
16:15 <MTughan> Ah, it checks the host flag... I pass it i686-apple-darwin, which is technically correct.
16:16 <MTughan> But it rejects it because it's not known. I'll add an exception.
16:23 <MTughan> Shoot... "missing or invalid immediate expression `<...>' taken as 0" "suffix or operands invalid for `pshufd'"
16:24 <MTughan> Wow... Missing feature from Apple's compiler.
16:24 <yoyo[RKN]> sounds not good
16:25 <MTughan> Apparently, 0b* means take the number as binary, which Apple doesn't understand. Converting to the hex or decimal equivalent is apparently the fix.
16:29 <MTughan> Well, the compiler accepts it at least...
16:34 <MTughan> Running now...
16:34 <yoyo[RKN]> see if it is faster..
16:35 <PovAddict> in asm?
16:38 <xcamel> 'lo
16:38 <MTughan> 'lo Jay
16:38 <MTughan> PovAddict: Yeah, it enabled some ASM code, presumably to take advantage of hand-tweaked SSE2.
16:39 <yoyo[RKN]> did you run make check, MTughan
16:40 <MTughan> I didn't modify libgmp.
16:40 <MTughan> It passed the previous check, so I didn't bother testing again.
16:40 <xcamel> well.. almost hit 50F
16:41 <MTughan> I don't see an SSE2 or an asm-redc flag on libgmp anyway.
16:41 <MTughan> Looks like step 1 was about 20 seconds faster...
16:42 <MTughan> Estimated memory the same as before.
16:43 <MTughan> Step 2 was over 20 seconds faster too.
16:44 <Romulus> Title: pastebin - collaborative debugging tool (at pastebin.com)
16:46 <yoyo[RKN]> step2 from 116s -> 83s
16:46 <MTughan> Oh, 30 seconds faster... Nice speedup.
