01:43 <dchmelik> Maybe I made it up myself to make a script that could start or stop boinc.
01:43 <dchmelik> Yeah, I guess that is what I did... did anyone else ever do that?

11:22 <ilyak> hi *
11:23 <ilyak> I've just yum installed boinc and boincmgr to my fedora
11:23 <ilyak> I've started both boinc_client (via /sbin/service) and boincmgr
11:23 <ilyak> but boincmgr can't see boinc-client for some reason, why?
11:23 <PovAddict> oh dear god, hope it's not the same problem as on Ubuntu
11:23 <PovAddict> what desktop environment do you have?
11:24 <ilyak> Well, I'm not logged into any of them, but I guess there's gnome
11:24 <ilyak> I'm operating on it via ssh+X11 forwarding
11:25 <ilyak> my desktop (another box) has kde
11:25 <PovAddict> ah
11:25 <PovAddict> well, if fedora has the same problem as ubuntu, then launching boinc manager from the application list of your desktop environment works, and running 'boincmgr' from a shell doesn't
11:26 <PovAddict> because boincmgr is looking for a certain file in the current directory, and the app list launcher sets boincmgr's current directory to where that file is; so if you run it manually from anywhere else it doesn't work
11:26 <PovAddict> do you have a /etc/boinc-client?
11:26 <ilyak> oh!
11:26 <ilyak> nope
11:27 <PovAddict> anything with 'boinc' in its name in /etc? :P
11:27 <ilyak> "The BOINC client requires initialization" do I need to do anything with that before connecting with boincmgr?
11:27 <ilyak> zsh: no matches found: /etc/*boinc*
11:28 <PovAddict> ok, then it's not the same structure as on debianoids
11:28 <PovAddict> /var/lib/boinc-client or /var/lib/boinc? either of those should exist
11:29 <ilyak> It seems that I need to auth it
11:30 <ilyak> It's very bad that boincmgr doesn't hints that
11:30 <PovAddict> yes, but the manager can read the password by itself, from gui_rpc_auth.cfg in the current directory
11:30 <ilyak> It's not in the current directory
11:30 <ilyak> it's in /var/lib/boinc
11:30 <PovAddict> then make/var/lib/boinc the current directory before running boincmgr
11:32 <ilyak> Nope, it still wouldn't connect
11:32 *** stux|RC has joined #boinc
11:32 <PovAddict> what are the permissions of gui_rpc_auth.cfg?
11:32 <ilyak> Now it would work
11:33 <ilyak> But I have to say - it sucks a big time
11:33 <PovAddict> what did you do to make it work?
11:33 <ilyak> It positively shouldn't work that way
11:33 <ilyak> Well, cd /var/lib/boinc and run that as root
11:33 <PovAddict> bad, don't run as root
11:33 <ilyak> Sure
11:34 <ilyak> but gui_rpc_auth.cfg is only readable by root
11:34 <PovAddict> then change its permissions so you can read it, but don't run boincmgr as root
11:34 <PovAddict> <ilyak> It positively shouldn't work that way <- it's half boinc's fault and half the fault of Fedora packagers
11:35 <ilyak> I've added WCG
11:35 <ilyak> I'll try running it the normal way
11:36 <ilyak> Scheduler request failed: HTTP error 0 <-- WTF??
11:41 <ilyak> Why wouldn't it connect? What's http error 0?
11:42 <PovAddict> it's not actually HTTP 0
11:42 <PovAddict> being WCG, most probably you have an issue related to SSL
11:42 <PovAddict> but I'm now busy writing a long rant email about your previous problem - I've seen it a dozen times by now
11:45 <ilyak> In fact, boincmgr should tell you on your first start:
11:46 <ilyak> "What's your server to connect? I guess it's localhost. And what's the password? You can find it in /var/lib/..."
11:46 <ilyak> The standard sign-up form
11:46 <PovAddict> no, it should work out-of-the-box without asking you anything
11:46 <ilyak> That's harder if you aren't root
11:48 <ilyak> But it surely could ask for a password and tell me how to find it out
11:48 <ilyak> Instead of puzzling me

22:22 <jasong> Check out this little nugget of personal madness: When I download the ubuntu install iso from the net, it matches the one on the web perfectly, but it gets corrupted when it's written to a dvd. On the other hand, no matter how many times I write it to a dvd, the corrupted iso always returns the same md5sum
22:22 <jasong> this is with totally different burns
22:23 <Soul_keeper> you sure it's corrupted and not just being written in the wrong way ?
22:23 <jasong> I now have an assumed legit cd(yes, I'm going to double-check it) on the way in the mail. But until then, I can't do anything deemed important(like DCing) until I can unfsck it
22:23 <jasong> Well, I'm using the Linux writing program

22:23 <Romulus> hmm... what program is the toes attaching and reattaching, Soul_keeper
22:24 <jasong> That's the Ubuntu update program
22:24 <Soul_keeper> one of those fancy frontends to cdrecord ?
22:24 <jasong> It's a weird graphic, that's for sure
22:24 <jasong> No, it's just the generic Ubuntu burner
22:24 <Soul_keeper> try burning the iso directly from commandline with cdrrecord like a man
22:24 <Soul_keeper> i've never had a problem doing it that way
22:25 <jasong> Question, if it's burning wrong, will it still be possibly bootable?
22:25 <jasong> because they are definitely booting
22:25 <Soul_keeper> maybe .. I don't know what program you are using or what it is doing
22:26 <Soul_keeper> many of these gui burning programs just use the cdrecord command in the background
22:27 <Soul_keeper> also I recommend having as low of cpu usage while burning
22:27 <Soul_keeper> dma is not implemented so corruption is much more likely during a burn process
22:27 <Soul_keeper> atleast it wasn't implemented last I checked
22:28 <Soul_keeper> it would take me more than 1 google search to figure out what a "generic Ubuntu burner" is
22:29 <jasong> Well, I've been fighting with this for days, and it'll be easier to verify what's what after I install a known good cd
22:30 <jasong> If the cd I get in the mail doesn't get the right md5sum, I might just go stark raving mad
22:30 <Soul_keeper> that could be worth watching :)
22:30 <PovAddict> jasong: when the CD boots, one of the options in the CD is "verify disc"
22:30 <jasong> Of course I'll still try to install it, since my corrupt installation kight end up correcting the md5sum check
22:30 <jasong> Yeah, that's the weird thing, those always pass
22:31 <PovAddict> then you should be fine
22:31 <jasong> and, yet, I'm far from it
22:31 <jasong> My BIOS has never been updated, can that cause OS errors?
22:31 <Soul_keeper> not if it didn't before
22:32 <jasong> I've never updated it because I'm afraid of doing unusual stuff with the hardware
22:32 <PovAddict> if the disc boots and the built-in verify works, install from it
22:32 <Soul_keeper> do you have a usb flash drive by any chance ?
22:32 <jasong> okay

22:38 <jasong> Yeah, that's how I know it was corrupted
22:39 <jasong> If you really want to help me, let's wait until the cd actually gets here, that will reduce the chance that they will have to put me in a room with padded walls ;)
22:39 <PovAddict> but you burned multiple times and every time it gave the same wrong md5?
22:39 <jasong> Well, I didn't archive each md5, but the last one looked really familar
22:40 <PovAddict> did you try putting that one into Google? :)
22:40 <jasong> just a sec, I'll try that
22:41 <jasong> no matches
22:41 <PovAddict> do you have the apparently-wrongly-burned CD now?
22:42 <jasong> Yeah, I just reinstalled it on my quad-core so I can play my favorite game until the other cd comes in the mail
22:42 <jasong> I can play games with the corrupted install, I just can't depend on it for important stuff
22:42 <PovAddict> and do you have the iso you downloaded?
22:42 <jasong> also, the installs are only slightly less stable then windows
22:42 <jasong> yes
22:43 <jasong> It checked out
22:43 <PovAddict> try cmp -v /dev/dvd ubuntu-blah.iso
22:43 <PovAddict> run 'cmp' on the CD device and the iso
22:43 <jasong> okay, as soon as the cd ejects after the install
22:44 <PovAddict> oh you're still installing
22:44 <jasong> Yeah, it hangs for a couple minutes before rebooting
22:47 <jasong> That -v option shouldn't've been in there, I took it out and it's running now
22:48 <PovAddict> oh
22:48 <PovAddict> I saw --verbose and I thought the short version was -v
22:48 <PovAddict> turns out it's -l (for "list")
22:48 <jasong> that's okay, I just looked at the help file
22:50 <jasong> I'm curious to see if the new install agrees about the md5sum the laptop generates for the cd
22:53 <Soul_keeper> HAHA they are giving "serious consideration" to adding pole dancing as an olympic sport
