14:59 <Tank_Master> what OS are you using?
14:59 <infocus> win 7
14:59 <Tank_Master> not sure then
15:00 <infocus> atom with two threads
15:00 <Tank_Master> yeah, i had the dual core version for a while

18:58 <CoderForLife> hi Doug
18:58 <CoderForLife> where's Jay been lately?
18:59 <wdsmia> no idea down south?
18:59 <Rookie_69> Mexico???
18:59 <CoderForLife> hey Rookie_69
18:59 <Rookie_69> Hi, Don.
18:59 <CoderForLife> I reckon so
18:59 <CoderForLife> you loking forward to snow Glenn?
19:00 <CoderForLife> looking even
19:00 <Rookie_69> With this week's temps, I'd be down south.
19:01 <Rookie_69> Winter is my favorite season... except for all the snow, cold, and darkness.
19:01 <CoderForLife> let's see - my antivirus software vendor, located in the Czech Republic, wnats we to store all my account passwords on their server for $9.99/year
19:01 <CoderForLife> dang
19:01 <CoderForLife> wants me
19:02 <CoderForLife> Ihave a feeling that's just the beginning of the costs
19:03 <Rookie_69> In the long run, there's only one price... Every penny you have.
19:04 <CoderForLife> that's along the lines of my thinking
19:05 <CoderForLife> it does make things easier - there's just one password to crack to pwn me
19:05 <CoderForLife> think of it as an economic stimulus plan
19:07 <PovAddict> why would someone want off-site storage of *passwords*, let alone pay for it?
19:08 * PovAddict recently set up two-factor authentication to ssh to his home machine
19:08 <CoderForLife> why would I want it, or why would they want it?
19:08 <PovAddict> lol, good point
19:09 <CoderForLife> Like someone said, "Security Is Rarely Convenient"
19:09 <CoderForLife> and hi PovAddict
19:10 <CoderForLife> the mass of the cereal bus is tremendous - look at that gravitational lensing

19:55 * CoderForLife wonders how to get someone to pwn his bills, and not his money
19:56 <CoderForLife> ok - something on topic - now that the winter heating season is upon us here in the Northern Hemisphere, what are the fashionable projects to run?
19:57 * CoderForLife never thought of himself as a creature of fashion
19:58 <efc> Most of my bills are protected with state department grade encryption, can't have anybody paying those for me.
19:59 <efc> Though they might show up on wikileaks.
19:59 <PovAddict> CoderForLife: you mean what BOINC projects produce the most heat?
19:59 <CoderForLife> heh efc
19:59 <CoderForLife> actually Pov, I was thinking of producing value
19:59 <CoderForLife> heat will be a by-product
20:00 <efc> channel has been pretty quiet for months now.. seems like no new fad projects.
20:00 <CoderForLife> what projects are worthy of my kWs?
20:00 * PovAddict hasn't run BOINC at all in a while :o
20:00 <efc> How about transcoding my movie for me? Its running about 15:1 of realtime on ye old P4.
20:00 <CoderForLife> well - me either
20:01 <PovAddict> efc: consider the data transfer time too
20:01 *** Aeternus has quit IRC
20:01 <CoderForLife> and that moves the human race forward, how, efc?
20:02 <efc> I'm part of the human race right? though i guess it doesn't help me much either.
20:03 <PovAddict> according to David Anderson, human race won't move forward for too long unless we reduce population down to a few million -- one of the few things where I fully agree with him
20:03 <CoderForLife> is there a volunteer list?
20:04 <ShadowHntr> only if someone wants to give me a *massive* dilaudid overdose and a big life insurance payout to my family
20:04 <efc> Population control is great when you aren't part of the population thats getting Controlled.
20:04 <CoderForLife> I guess I wasn't specific as to if the list was the "stay" or "go" list
20:05 <efc> about 200 million in the US would be a lot more confortable
20:05 <PovAddict> efc: no need for mass extermination
20:05 <CoderForLife> be careful what you sign up for
20:05 <PovAddict> mass sterilization will do :P
20:05 * PovAddict dodges tomatos and heavier objects
20:06 <efc> But not my pliers. Snip.
20:06 * PovAddict has no sympathy for poor people struggling to feed their 12 children
20:07 <CoderForLife> so they go on the list?
20:07 <CoderForLife> maybe we should create a BOINC project to figure this all out
20:07 <efc> 12 down, 6 billion-12 to go.
20:08 <CoderForLife> if it's worthy of discussion, it's worthy of computation
20:09 <CoderForLife> let's add a function that adds emphasis to people that live in famine-prone areas - it's the only humane thing to do
20:10 <CoderForLife> and those that keep exotic animals in cages on farms in Ohio
20:11 <CoderForLife> heh
20:15 <CoderForLife> Ohio is especially hazardous to monkeys, who get out the the cage only to get inside the lions
20:15 <PovAddict> :/
20:20 <CoderForLife> so - what projects should I fire up?
20:20 <PovAddict> "Hardin says that a world in which individuals rely on themselves and not on the relationship of society and man, how many children a family would have would not be a public concern. Parents who breed excessively would leave fewer descendants because they would be unable to provide for each child adequately." [...] "Hardin says that if the children of improvident parents starved to death, if overbreeding was its own punishment--then there would
20:20 <PovAddict> be no public interest in controlling the breeding of families"
20:21 <CoderForLife> hmm
20:21 <CoderForLife> And Hardin knows this how/why?
20:21 <CoderForLife> Hardin Who?
20:22 <PovAddict> Garrett Hardin, author of "The Tragedy of the Commons"
20:22 <CoderForLife> not familiar with that
20:23 <PovAddict> "The tragedy of the commons is a dilemma arising from the situation in which multiple individuals, acting independently and rationally consulting their own self-interest, will ultimately deplete a shared limited resource, even when it is clear that it is not in anyone's long-term interest for this to happen"
20:23 <CoderForLife> Sounds like Agent Smith from The Matrix
20:24 <CoderForLife> or the Nash Equilibrium from "A Beautiful Mind"
20:25 <CoderForLife> in which case the "limited resource" was the tall blonde
20:25 <CoderForLife> and the sharing was, well, um
20:26 <wdsmia> NN Glenn
20:26 <PovAddict> okay, then I don't want to know what 'deplete' meant in that case
20:26 <Rookie_69> NN.
