00:10 <Zumu> does it mean I should start X on second GPU too to control fan?

01:08 <Zumu> einstein@home thinks I have 2xGTX680:

01:08 <Romulus> <> (at

01:08 <Zumu> it should be 580 + 680 ;(

01:17 <efc> I never explored different gfx cards in the same box.. guess it should work for CUDA..

01:31 <efc> I wonder why the Messages tab was moved to a menu

03:40 <Zumu> it seems lame but both nvidias share one interrupt

03:40 <Tank_Master> so your at 8x speed?

03:41 <Tank_Master> boinc typically doesnt care between 8x and 16x. most apps are sontained withing the gpu and dont use the interface except to save info and give status updates

03:48 <Zumu> Tank_Master:

03:49 <Zumu> seems like both are at 16x

03:53 <Tank_Master> thats good

03:54 <Tank_Master> the sharing of the interupt shouldnt impact performance anymore

03:54 <Zumu> but they share IRQ 16

03:54 <Tank_Master> thats fine

03:54 <Zumu> ok

03:55 <Tank_Master> the whole interupt thing changes when they came out with true interupt sharing

03:56 <Zumu> I remember it was a problem when both network cards for example were sharing one interrupt

03:56 <Tank_Master> right

16:49 <cassandra_mich> i wanna compare Boinc platform to Hadoop map reduce on cloud infrastructure. Can any help with pointers to what all I would need to setup boinc there?

16:50 *** whynot has joined #boinc

16:53 <Tank_Master> i know nothing of hadoop

17:00 <cassandra_mich> Tank_Master, thats ok..

17:01 <cassandra_mich> if i have 1Gb file to be processed and tell me frequency of each word appearing in file. How would I do that using boinc?

17:02 <cassandra_mich> i would wanna split 1gb as 512 * 2mb files and then distribute to clients a chunk of 2mb

17:03 <cassandra_mich> Should i be writing my own client for it?

17:04 <cassandra_mich> how about the coordinator?. does it also require changes?

17:04 <Tank_Master> boinc supports sending incermental updates (climate prediction does this)

17:05 <Tank_Master> but i dont know the coding or backend aspect of BOINC that well

17:10 <cassandra_mich> seems like i m missing info about working of boinc. Can you please suggest *good* pointers to study architectures?

17:11 <Tank_Master> have you looked on boinc site for info?

17:12 <Tank_Master> not sure how up to date or complete that is

18:11 <PovAddict> cassandra_mich: hadoop and boinc are completely different

18:11 <PovAddict> I'm pretty sure hadoop is real time for starters

18:14 <cassandra_mich> i understand it. i just have to compare them for sake of experiments.

18:15 <cassandra_mich> i m just trying to know what and how to do stuff using boinc?

18:15 <PovAddict> okay

18:15 <cassandra_mich> like if i wanna process 1G of file.

18:16 <PovAddict> in BOINC you put tasks in a queue, clients get tasks from the server's queue, download input files, run the application, upload the output files

18:17 <PovAddict> if you want to process a 1GB file, you'd have to write your own code to split it and generate BOINC tasks from each piece

18:20 <cassandra_mich> wow!. thats so close to what i was expecting.

18:20 <cassandra_mich> can i ask you for few more details?.

18:21 <PovAddict> also, if you have a 1GB file and you want to split it into 2MB pieces, you would create 512 tasks

18:21 <PovAddict> you probably have to tweak the configuration to avoid having just a few clients grab them all and leave other clients idle

18:22 <PovAddict> since clients have their own queue too

18:22 <Tank_Master> just note, you will not get tasks back in order they were sent do to the work load and speed of the indivisual comps.

18:22 <Tank_Master> dont know if thats important or not

18:22 <cassandra_mich> PovAddict, a) how i create taks? b)should i be writing my own client?.  c) can i install boinc on my linux server?

18:23 <PovAddict> the BOINC server is only tested to work on Linux

18:23 <Tank_Master> there was work a while back on making the server work on windows server, but i think that has been abbandoned now

18:24 <cassandra_mich> how about client?. should i be writing one?. any pointers on where to start?

18:24 *** Guest16196 has joined #boinc

18:25 <Tank_Master> the boinc client works on all 3 major OSs

18:25 <PovAddict> it *might* work on other Unix flavors, and it will definitely not work on Windows :)

18:25 <PovAddict> bbl

18:25 <Tank_Master> or are you talking about the client application your project would send to the user's comp to run your work?

18:27 <cassandra_mich> Tank_Master, yes. client downloads 2M file and has to process it. So to process, where does it get code from ?

18:28 <Tank_Master> boinc downloas the application you build from your server and runs it

18:28 <Tank_Master> using the tasks that also gets downloaded from your server

18:28 <cassandra_mich> ah i see. that was useful info.

18:29 <Tank_Master> all boinc is capible of is scedualing and running work using the application the project provides

18:29 <cassandra_mich> so, now to the big question. how i make tasks?.

18:29 <Tank_Master> that you would need to talk to pov about

18:29 <Tank_Master> i havent had any experence with that end of BOINC

18:29 <cassandra_mich> sure thanks.

19:12 <cassandra_mich> hi, so i m stuck at two things: a) how to create tasks b) how to write application which makes volunteer computer to download an available file, process it and upload results back to my server

19:13 <PovAddict> you only write the 'process it' part :)

19:15 <Tank_Master> boinc client handles the downlaoding and sending part

19:17 <PovAddict> I'm being eaten by mosquitos D:

19:20 <cassandra_mich> and how to creating tasks?
