11:05 <q5p4k0> greetings

11:06 <dddh> in the red torch theater

11:07 <q5p4k0> question on cpu frequency scaling.  For my laptop, I have prevented BOINC from max'ing out my clock speed since.. however.. for desktop machine.. is there any downsize to letting BOINC hammer the cpu frequency to max?

11:08 <dddh> q5p4k0: "what config file can I limit the max # of cpu that boinc utilizes." - cc_config.xml

11:08 <dddh> ncpus

11:08 <dddh>

11:08 <Romulus> <> (at

11:11 <dddh> q5p4k0: it will be hot with all cores running at full speed

11:12 <q5p4k0> why does BOINC do this by default?  It looks like it would be ideal to prevent max cpu frequencing scaling by default

11:12 <dddh> hm, why do you think it should?

11:14 <q5p4k0> to prevent possible overheating..

11:14 <hidgw> I'll admit I've wished BOINC would limit the usage of tasks such that they never use more than the % CPU limit in any given moment, but then I realized that that's not how CPU scheduling works

11:14 <hidgw> Though it does make life interesting watching BOINC tasks use 99%, 20%, 98%, 32%, 93%...

11:15 <q5p4k0> well I am more concerned with the frequency of the core than the amount of cores being utilized

11:17 <hidgw> I'm talking about per-core utilization myself, actually

11:17 <hidgw> but frequency scaling would be nice, in theory

11:19 <q5p4k0> under linux I can control the frequency scaling.. on my laptop, I have a governor in place so that the frequency remains at 50% on all cores.. I am thinking of doing the same thing for desktop.. but it impacts all programs that run in nice mode..

12:53 <Tank_Master> q5p4k0: dwsktop CPUs are designed to run 24x7 at around 95C (max depends on actual cpu spects, but a lot are around that value)

12:54 <Tank_Master> and most cooling solutions are more than enough to prevent it from reaching that hot when the cpu is at full load

12:57 <Caterpillar> still people afraid of running CPU at 100% load?

13:10 <Tank_Master> some are, but they ususally dont know what tepms a CPU can actually handle

13:11 <Tank_Master> they see that its running at 150f and think itll burn up when in reallity it can handle temps closer to 200f and be fine, and that CPUs today will either throttle back on their own or compleatly shut off to prevent over heating

13:13 <microchip_> Tank_Master: so you're saying the max operating temp, of say an AMD Phenom II x6 proc is well above the 62C as AMD says

13:15 <microchip_> i know GPUs usually can handle much higher temps compared to CPUs. eg, my GTX 560's max is 98C

13:18 <Tank_Master> im not as well veresed with AMD chips, but if thats the max AMD claims, than thats its max

13:18 <Tank_Master> Intel CPUs can generally handle up to 95c

13:19 <Tank_Master> the intel atom can go even higher

13:21 <microchip_> Intel claims max is 66.8°C for the i7-4930K, for example

13:35 <Tank_Master> humm, 72c for the 4770

13:36 <Tank_Master> and 100c for the 15w i7-4600u

13:42 <q5p4k0> yeah, I am not sure what temperature my processors are running at on my desktop machine.  I will have to look into that.  I just know that with pstate enabled and utilizing sandybridge processor, BOINC is max out the cpu frequencies on all cores (regardless if only a specific number of cores are dedicated to BOINC).  With pstate disabled, one could effectively governor with ondemand and ignore_nice_load.  This

13:42 <q5p4k0> is not the case with pstate enabled.  I will take your advice and see if I can determine the cpu temperatures

13:43 <Tank_Master> what operating system are you using?

13:44 <q5p4k0> linux w/kernel 3.12.5

13:46 <q5p4k0> I am using an i7-2600k that is known for its ability to take some heat.. so it will be interesting to see

13:46 <q5p4k0> what the temps are running at

13:57 <q5p4k0> with BOINC disabled.. temps run at 30-35C when frequences are not maxes.. when BOINC enabled and frequences maxed out.. temp is around 50C

14:01 <microchip_> q5p4k0: max temp is 72.6C -

14:01 <Romulus> <> (at

14:03 <q5p4k0> going to let them churn awahile at max frequency and see if the temp raises.. but running at 50C is great with a threshold of 72.6

14:03 <q5p4k0> awhile..

14:04 <microchip_> q5p4k0: stock cooler?

14:05 <q5p4k0> yes

14:06 <q5p4k0> in comparison.. my macbook pro6,2 with just one core running at max frequency.. temperatue is running at 82C

14:06 <microchip_> i bought a Scythe Mugen 3 for my FX 8350. Cools really well. CPU stays at 40C while under full load

14:06 <q5p4k0> I will have to take a look

16:40 <Caterpillar> q5p4k0: I just found out that this is intended behaviour by boinc developers

16:40 <Caterpillar> and I think it is crazy

16:40 <Caterpillar> now to submit a bug report I have to waste time by subscribing to the boinc alpha mailing list, writing an e-mail and blablabla

16:41 <Caterpillar> can't they use a normal bugreport website?

16:41 <q5p4k0> yeah, that is odd behavior.

16:42 <Tank_Master> on windows, closing the boinc manager GUI prompts if you want to also stop the boinc core or not
